Return now to the fifth grade and the dreaded word math problem:
A tourist is driving her car up a mountain. In one hour, traveling 30 miles per hour, she reaches the top of the mountain, whereupon she suddenly remembers that she forgot her camera. She immediately turns around and drives downhill at 60 mph.

Assuming she spent no time at the top, what was her average speed?

Is the top of the mountain 30 miles away from her house? YOu need to know either the time or the distance of her going back to figure out the problem.

Average speed for the entire trip?

Total distance travelled = 60 miles (assuming she lives at the base), total time = 90 mins

Avg speed = 40 mph (60/1.5)

<< which way is the wind? >>

You don't need to know, you were given her speed.

Mmm...I've heard it asked how fast she'd have to go down the hill to average 45 mph...
