Looking at the pitching stats for the NL it would appear that if Clemens has another bad outing and if Carpenter continues to retire ~7 batters (and pitch shutouts) (He is 3 behind the leader right now), he will lead in all 3 Leage Categories. Is it possible to win the triple crown in pitching?

i dont think he'll catch the rocket in e.r.a. though. too much banking of clemens to have a bad outing and carpenter to pitch damn near perfect ball. peavy should have a bigger lead in the strike out category, but with all the minor injuries that caused him to miss a start here and there it looks like he might get overtaken. but then again, he eeked out the e.r.a. title last season, so i got faith in my boy jake that he'll come out strong in his next few outings to secure the strike out title.

edit: but carpenter should be pretty much a lock for cy young though. shame roger cant get no run support.

Yeah... Clemens is one of my All-Time favorite pitchers (Him and Bob Gibson). Shame that he is suddenly going downhill, i wish the Astros would give him some support.

As for S.O. Peavy is at 201 and Carpenter is at 198. So assuming good starts there is a strong possibility that carpenter will overtake him.

ERA however is a long shot. Clemens still has an UNREAL 1.79ERA, and Carp is still at 2.21ERA. So Clemens would have to do horrible, and Carp would have to pitch shutouts to catch him. As much as i would like to see carp do good, not at the expense of Clemens getting shelled.

the reason i think peavy will take it is because after they (st. l) clinch, larussa wont be having carp out there for that long to save his arm for the playoffs. on the other hand, san diego could be in a race near the end , or even now since the only teams we play out of our division is washington this upcoming weekend. but both picthers face weaker teams this week, so perhaps one of them could have a bad outing and could be the deciding factor. also, keep in mind pedro is right there in the race also, one shy of carp.

It's much easier for Clemens ERA to rise then Carpenters ERA to fall.

If Carpenter throws 4 shutouts, his ERA will only fall from 2.21 to 2.11

Over his last 5 starts, Clemens ERA has been 4.45, and he's pitched an average of 5.2 innings. During that time, his ERA has risen from 1.32 to 1.78. If he continues pitching like that, his ERA at the end of the season will be 2.05. If he pitches like he did that last start, his ERA will rise to 2.55.

In other words, Carpenter can pitch amazing, but Clemens still has to screw up royally. Clemens may pitch himself out of the Cy Young award, but probably won't let Carpenter win the Triple Crown.
