So my dad goes in for triple bypass on monday, he's only 43...hasn't smoked in over 20 years, has had a good diet for awhile now...no other conditions body related. I'm going down there sunday to be with him when he goes in on monday.

Has anyone else had/know anyone thats had a triple bypass, I'm scared to death something might happen to him and I don't know if I could handle losing him this young, he's only 43. I've read that it's an extremely common procedure (800,000 a year) but.....

I know he's got more positive going for him then not, I'm just scared for his health more then anything has ever scared me in my life.

I told my wife I'd need a team of therapists if something bad happened, I'm 99% sure he'll be ok but I can't help but worry for his health, wellbeing and life. He doesn't deserve this, he's a saint.

Reassuring words anyone? I know someone out there has to have known at least SOMEBODY thats had this procedure.

Sorry for being long winded, just had to get this off my chest.

It's amazing, sometimes people always take how much someone means to you for granted. I'm learning a big life lesson right now that I never expected to have to deal with. Whats worse to top that off, my family has a history of heart attacks, I'm scared to death I'm going to be next. I'll almost guarantee my diet is worse then most peoples here. Smoking, drinking, high strung. It's time for a change.

I'm stuck here listening to Jimmy Buffett wishing him and I were back @ mararitaville having a cold one like last year...

My dad has had a couple surgeries in the last few years, so I know exactly how you feel. Make sure to spend some time with him when he gets released.

Perhaps some of these heart issues are from stress....which is clearly underlying factor of this thread.

Thats the thing that'll really suck though. He'll get out of surgery monday afternoon, and I have to fly back to sh!tty minnesota tuesday morning. I'll see him again in October....but still. F#*K this sucks. I'm going to be quite inebriated (sp?) by the time I get off tuesdays flight.

So I'll see him hooked up to all the machines sore and in pain....then it'll be time to go home. Not the last thing you want to see when you leave. He lives in Florida so it's not like I can just up and go visit him.

Of course you are worried about it,but open heart surgery is getting to the point where it is routine. My uncle had a quadruple and that was 5 years ago and he states "After the surgery I felt 20 years younger"

My Aunt had a triple bypass she came out with flying colors but she passed away due to liver cancer which was tottaly seperate from that surgery.

Please let us know how things went.

I'll be sure to do that, this is the only place I knew I could post this and get mature replies.

My wifes dad had a quadruple and he lived for almost a year afterwards but he had diabetes, smoked for a long time, lotta drinking, 20 years older, just totally different situation, even though I think a little of seeing all that happen to her dad slightly rubbed off on me even though both situations are completely different.

I guess I should just be happy I have someone that knows what going through something like this is like.

/me turns Outkast "The Whole World" on to cheer him up.

A guy at work just had a triple bypass about a month ago. He was back working last week.

Keep your head and your chin up, he'll be fine. Just have faith.

I am pretty sure that's okay. in fact it will make your dad okay-

I just read the book Jack:Straight from the gut. (Jack Welch). From there I found out that this operation is becoming quite the common.

My mom had a triple bypass October 2, 2002 so I know EXACTLY what you are feeling right now. It is a tough thing to go through but just be thankful the procedure is possible. . I value life and am much closer to all of my family as a result of this surgery. I wish you the best and I will pray for you and your family.

I've never had surgery, but work in a large cardiac hospital that does a lot of heart surgery. Having a CABG is pretty safe (but still not risk-free). I'm amazed at all the good outcomes we have considering how sick some patients are. If your dad is in decent shape, he should be fine (ie, not having emergent bypass with an AMI, cardiogenic shock, post-arrest,etc...) Since he is scheduled for surgery on Monday, that is a good sign (vs going to surgery asap)

Keep in mind, that having getting through surgery of this magnitude isn't just relying on the surgeon. Having a good anesthesia dept is very important, as well as good post-op ICU nurses.

Expect him to be in a ICU/CCU setting for 1-2 days, then moving to a regular floor. While in CCU/ICU, he'll be asleep still for a while, and may be groggy after waking up, thats not unusual.

Good luck, I'm sure he'll do fine.

My dad got it done a few years ago. I was scared, too, but they do so many of them nowadays that it has become a routine operation. It's no longer the experimental gamble that it used to be. There is still risk involves, but they really have it down to a science now.

what is the diff between a single bypass and a triple bypass??

Open-heart surgery, or CABG (Coronary artery bypass graft) is just bypassing a blocked artery that supplies blood to your heart. There are several main coronary arteries (Left main, LAD, circ, etc..) and branches off these main arteries. When you have a CABG, they take either other arteries or veins in your body, and use them to bypass the blocked artery. You can have as many bypasses as needed to deliver blood to your heart (within reason, such as availability of other veins/arteries). Also, if the valves are damaged or not working correctly, you can have a valve replacement (MVR, AVR).

To most people, when they say open-heart surgery they mean either a valve replacement surgery or CABG (or both)

Thanks for all the support everyone, I appreciate it very much. Between hearing what I've heard so far from everyone and the research I've done myself as the time gets closer I get more confident about it.

Now all thats left to do for the day is pack a bag, and go to Hooters for a little while. If theres any one place that can get my mind off it all....it's Hooters. Whats ironic and sh!tty about that too, he obviously can't eat at his fav. restaurant Hooters now like he used to, I've got a gift certificate for him for Hooters....he'll probably be stuck eating a salad there now. :(

P.S. Can I get some of those hooters to go please? No.....not the wings.....the hooters. lol
