hi, i want to run 98, 2k, and redhat6.2 on my system.

i heard that you can only install ops on the first 4gb, otherwise it wont work. i want to know if this is true, and if so, why is it like that. thanks!

In the case of WIn2K and Linux, you need to have the kernl (\winnt directory for Win2K, /boot for Linux) in the first 8GB of your drive. The is a new version of LILO that removes this restriction for Linux. Win98 doesn't follow this paradigm exactly due to part of the second "restriction."

The other consideration is that your C: drive for Win2K and Win9x must NOT be NTFS. C: must also be in the first 8GB of your drive.

The 8GB issue is a result of BIOSes not being able to boot from a hard drive cylinder above 1024 (roughly 8GB into your drive).

Search the archives for 'dissertation' to see how I set up a quad-boot system.
