there seems to be a lot of drunkar... drinkers on ATOT. Has anyone ever had Sam Adams Triple Bock, millenium, or Utopia? If so where did you get it? I can't find it anywhere, that may due to it being illegal in my state... can it be ordered from anywhere?

I bought a case of Sam Adams Triple Bock sometime around 1993-95. It was VERY expensive at the time, $4-5 dollars per bottle. Each bottle was made of black glass and contained 8 ounces if I recall correctly and sealed with cork.

I was a big fan of boutique beer back in those days, but let me tell you, this stuff was pretty rancid. Tasted like liquid tree bark or something. I only drank one bottle, the rest of the case is sitting in storage somewhere.

It was beer in name only. It tasted a little like molasses and maple syrup mixed with cooking sherry. Even if you like normal bock beer or dopplebocks, the Sam Adams triple bock was essentially undrinkable.

Sam Adams never actually made anything. Someone else brews it and they put their labels on it.

As for the OP, there are much better Bocks out there. I don't believe they are illegal in Missouri. You can probably get them online.

Just looked at the web site. "In 2004, Chocolate Bock pushed beer to another extreme by bringing together two of life's greatest pleasures..."

Whatever. Chocolate beers have been around long before this.

And the Utopia? Don't waste your money.

Sam Adams=W.T. sofisticashun.

I had a bottle of this once. It took me 2 days of taking "shots" of it to finish it off. The first shot was not pleasant but the taste grew on me afterwards. This was definitely one of the oddest christmas presents my wife ever gave me. :D

If you're looking for a high ABV beer, try Chimay Bleu or Semiclaus (sp?). Both excellent examples and available in Missouri. Since you mention Rogue, try the I2PA. Very interesting if you like IPAs.

I tried the SA Triple Bock - it was basically like soy sauce.

FYI, there are any number of really tasty English and American barleywine ales that are very high in alcohol, but actually taste good and don't cost $5 for an 8-oz bottle.

yeah i've had chimay... really good. but i don't consider that high ABV. it's only like 10% as i recall. i consider high ABV as 15%+. of course then you are probably getting into barley wines. speaking of which, can anyone recommend a barley wine?

I agree, Sam Adams triple bock was the only bad Sam Adams I ever had.

At least in the beginning, the Triplebock was only brewed and bottled in their Boston, MA plant. I've seen the Jack Daniels barrells they were using to age it. I've touched them. Granted, there are a number of places they lease for brewing of their normal beers, but at the time the Boston plant was the only one making the TB.

As for higher alcohol volume beers go, Aventinus is one of my personal favorites. If you can get it on tap, it's wonderful. Bottles are good as well. I believe it's around 8% and tastes like a sweet hefeweisen. Most of these "beers" are more for afficinados and not to get drunk. It's like having a meal, then pouring a glass to sip on for an hour or two.

Also, according to thebrewsite:

Due to legal restrictions, Samuel Adams® Triple Bock® can not be sold in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, and West Virginia.

Barley Wines start at around 10%. Anything less is usually considered an old Ale. Big Foot is Sierra Nevada's and pretty good.

Keep in mind that Barley Wine's are ales, big Bock's are lagers. And that the big Bock will favor malt over hops. The Barley Wine is traditionally very hoppy. If you want an extreme big beer, try Stone's Double Bastard. You can taste the alcohol, malt and hops. Very in your face. But of course, you probably won't like it and most likely aren't worthy of it anyway. ;)
