You best bet is some version of Microsoft's Streets & trips if you really want to control your route.

map24.com gives you some control of types of roads, but online mapping doesn't let you have intermediate waypoints.

Hrm, I leave in about 12 hours, so I'll try out Rand McNally TripPlanner (circa 1999) first, and then if that doesn't pan out,

Edit: TripPlanner doesn't have surface streets.
