Trin Needs a Car!

Hey guys I sold my classic 67' and my beater 93 Saturn so I need a used car for around 5k - suggestions? No Hondas!

Corolla?? Mitsubishi mirage, mazda portege, nissan sentra.. all very economical.. 🙂 I wonder why no honda? civic or acura integra fits your range too

then you want a volvo 🙂 🙂... 5000 can get you a older volvo.. if you get hit, that Excursion will flip I guess.. Volvo is like a tank

If you can find it... DOHC 1st gen Neon... post-MLS headgasket service. Cheap... fun to drive... easy to repair.

The SOHCs are fun too, but DOHC ups that fun factor with a higher redline, slightly better suspension packages.

NEON ACR! ACR!

Used Altima is hard to beat in bang-for-buck terms. Reliable. Reasonable amount of highway power. Back seat an adult actually fits in. Good-sized trunk. Decent mileage.

They're not the sexiest things on the road, but you can't be all that fussy for $5k.

Pontiac GrandAm GT or Pontiac Grand Prix.

A 95 or 96 Grand Prix is probably in your range as is a 96 or 97 GrandAm with a v6.

What do you look for in a car? Do you need capacity, reliability/longevity, get up, handling, what? The Volvo is a good suggestion, not much to look at but very solid if you're worried about the likes of Excursions hitting you. 🙂

Lack of amenities is why I didn't recommend the ACR directly, though some ACRs added some basic amenities.
You can go with Neon Sport coupe for all of that. There were some Plymouth branded Neons that also carried the DOHC 420 motor.

A nice early-90s Sentra SE-R is a very similar kind of car. The SR20DE is a nice peppy motor and the car is nimble & fun to drive, but imho the Neon is a better value since repair/maintenance is going to be cheaper.

Well I have been hit by big SUVs twice! Once in my buddies Geo metro (A Yukon ran a stop light and plowed us) and once again by an Excursion in my Saturn. I don't give a hoot about milage, my '67 got 14 mpg... not a fan of small cars either... I was looking at Intrepid... 96 with 70k on the ticker, 240 hp...??? anyone drive one of these?

Watch out on the trannys. Chrysler hasn't been the greatest w/ their slushboxes in those years.

Are you open to trucks? I also can attest to Dodge having some sloppy transmissions.

Got my vote as well. Cheap to buy, cheap to fix. I've seen lots of them go 150k with relatively little problems. Decent get up and go, good crash ratings (grand prix), and not to bad gas milage.
