I bought a supposed commercial neck hair trimmer off eBay awhile back and while it works ok, its not getting it close enough.

A month or so ago I was getting a haircut and the lady used something i've never seen before (and I stupidly forgot to ask about), it was long and metal (maybe 3-5" long) and she scraped/rubbed it against my neck and got my neck hair shorter than ever before. I don't think it was a straight razor, but maybe it was. Any idea what it was?

Or in the alternative, what do you recommend?

Should get close enough.

That would be a straight razor:

Probably not as nice as that one appears, but same principle.

I just use a normal safety razor. Just be careful not to alter your hairline back there. I don't recommend using any other sort of razor unless someone helps you because of the angle you'll have to work at will make it easy for you to cut yourself.

The barber more than likely used a straight razor with a disposable blade...some don't look like regular straight razors.

You should be able to get similar results with a safety razor, the hardest part is to do this without messing up your 'line'.

It probably was a straight razor. I have seen small ones that I assume are made for this exact purpose (and from experience, they work well).

A weed whacker generally does the trick. If you use it for nose hair wear safety glasses.
As you get older you'll find yourself in a never ending battle with hair, it grows from places that don't even have skin. You'll discover that you can't win, but you can fight it to a standstill and maintain a holding action.
