trimming the fat off win2k

ok so the xbox runs a 500 something KB win2k kernel, something like that, well, i just was sitting here pondering exactly what you can and cannot take out of the default win2k installation, something along the lines of win98lite but for 2k, and of course it would not cost money.

i took the /winnt/inf and /winnt/system32/drivers folders and compressed them, but overall there is just alot of crap in there that i know does not get used, are there any sites w/ info on this type of thing?

ideas?

You could remove some unneeded programs too.

look in your c:\winnt\inf\sysoc.inf , now remove all the HIDE entries, after that save it (make a backup of the original just in case 😉 ).

Now go to ADD/REMOVE programs & remove some windows programs you dont use.

This site has info on how to make a custom Win2000 install CD without Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Address Book, or Windows Scripting. This should save some space right there.

This is going to be my project for the Christmas holidays. I was a 98lite-r back in the day so I love doing stuff like this. I like the idea of being able to install an OS using only the apps I need without having things I don't use crammed down my throat.

This is what really cheeses me off about M$- all the integrated crap that is forced on us just because we want to use an M$ OS. At least Win2000/Xp is more stable, when IE4 would crash in 9x it would usually take the whole OS down with it, when something barfs in 2k/XP it just shuts the offending app down without taking the OS with it. This makes it a little less important to get rid of this stuff other than to save disk space. I just like doing it to say "up yours M$, I'll take my OS the way I want it, Thank you very much"
