TRIM - How Long Does it Take for a TRIM Cycle?

It is my understanding, emptying the recycle bin will trigger the TRIM process. How long does it take for W7 to TRIM the drive? Is it a matter of just seconds, minutes, or an extended duration of tens of minutes?

There is a reason I am curious. I typically empty my recycle bin just before putting it to sleep or shutting it down. I do not want to interrupt the TRIM cycle and never end up with the drive fully TRIMmed.

Deleting any file should cause the TRIM command to be sent to the drive for the affected pages and the time to do that should be in the single digit milliseconds.

If the drive, it's firmware, driver, etc are all written well and doing their job you shouldn't be able to interrupt the process.

TRIM helps garbage collection target exactly what it should 'clean up'. I have not seen a good investigation of when Win7 issues TRIM commands. However, it'd make most sense that after any file system delete to immediately issue TRIM. However that doesn't mean that GC will take place right away which sounds like what you want. GC is up to the SSD and assuming from your signature that you own an Intel, Intel does GC only when necessary. Actually as proven by Anand, IIRC, the Intel's also GC after a simple format in Win7.

TLDNR: You really want GC. Intel's do GC after a Win7 format. Don't worry about it.

If you're worried, just switch to emptying yesterday's recycling in the morning while checking your email.

I seen the wiper.exe TRIM utility for Indillinx based drives take as little as a split second and as much as 10 seconds
