The individual programs combined will use more.

Right now, while connected to AIM, ICQ, YIM, and MSN, Trillian is using 12.5MB

Trillian uses alot less memory than the individual programs do and you can install it on a network drive and not need admin access :)

aim is using 2 megs minimized to tray and 4 megs when the buddy list is up. 8 megs when 5 IM windows are open.

There's no way the all-in-ones could possibly use more than AOL's bloated adware. I like gaim, personally, but I'd use anything - including tin cans and a string - over AOL's crapware.

Trillian @ 11mb for me right now, but I have a ton of plugins in use... for example, News (RSS - quite a few connected too), Mail(POP3 notification), You've Got Gmail, Stocks, Weather, & Shipment Tracker... running along with AIM/MSN/Yahoo of course. I love it because I don't have to have all these proggies as separate programs sitting in my systray/taskbar.

Cause it doesn't need to be updated ;)

I've used Trillian for years and the updates they do are few and far between...

Well just MSN loads me with 10.7MB and with Plus! (the main reason I will continue using MSN and not an all in one) 2.2MB extra. I have Gaim for Ubuntu but I don't use it.
