Just think of it this way:

$25 for software that you probably use every day with brand new features and you get free upgrades for a year.

Anandtech is a forum that people pay $30 a year for and probably use it everday as well. To me it's worth it as much as my AT subscription and I'll probably be purchasing it sometime soon.

hrm... if i used the other clients i may be inclined to use it. if it were 10-15 i would definately go for it. i was going to donate that anyway.. but dammit.. i waited too long

im lucky and donated about 9 months ago........🙂

just installed it and i must say that with the plugins this is the best instant messanger ive ever seen......for gods sake they made their own mini browser!!! and u can see aol profiles like normal

i just wish they wouldn't have to charge people the 25 bucks......gonna lose a lot of people that way

i pay for software/music only when its dealing with the little guys as trillian once was......they need the support but no way is this $25 stuff reasonable

And they should think that charging by $25 they get $0 from me, but by charging $10 they get $10 from me.

It isn't like the Trillian program physically costs any amount of money (in advertising or a box on a shelf or anything like a normal computer program would have attached to it), just the little bit of download bandwidth. The only thing the price is really paying for is the programmers, and again, what would that programmer rather have: $10 of my money or $0 of my money?

I know that this argument could probably be applied to any computer program (and therefore making this argument worthless) but this seems like a different sort of scenario to me.

Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. But I do know they aren't getting $25 of my money.

I can't see my self paying $25 for a something could stop functioning tomorrow if AOL or any of the others block access to their networks.

It's certainly happened before.

I donated $5.00 some months ago to the project.

They offered Trillian Pro to me for free because of my donation. 😀

Pretty sweet.

That has me worried right there. Unless Trillian bought access to AOL, you can bet AOL's going to be very interested now that the Trillian guys are trying to make money on it; this might renew the efforts to block it, in which case the $25 is wasted anyway.

On a side note, I'm dissapointed an enthused by the "Pro" version. I'm dissapointed because over time, things that are "Pro" have a tendancy to become "mainstream" with the free version getting killed by a lack of updates, etc. Trillian .7x is a good program, I don't want to see it die(and Pro 1 isn't the same, it's a new UI with all new features/bloat). I'm also dissapointed in the price; $25 is almost half the cost of UT2K3, a AAA video game that's spent years in development. $10 I would do, it's fair for the features(note to Trillian: $10 for Pro minus the tech support, I don't have faith in software tech support), but $25 for a year of it is simply too much for some features I'd like, but many I'd never use. I'm also dissapointed in that they've turned it in to "nag-ware". It nagged me when I tried to send someone an IM.

On the upside, I'm enthused because of where this leads. It does seem to make for a good widget for buisness use, and with the video conferencing, I think buisnesses might give it a hard look at least for a bit. It's also good to see that they're "commiting" to it; unlike the free version they can't just "give up" on it, as they have support agreements, etc.

That said, I'm going to ride this out and see where it goes. I'm afraid it's going to become bloat-ware much like AIM, Y!, etc(after they're bought out of course), but we'll see. In the mean time, I'm plenty happy with .74.

If they would use some of the money and buy access to the networks that they are now using for free, I'd consider it. But it's too great of a risk to give them $25 and have them lose access to those networks. Features are nice, but a guarantee that those features are going to work in the future would be nicer.

Same here! Can't complain now 🙂 Sorry to all you free-loaders!

aves2k makes a good point...how can they guarantee access to the networks? If I were MSN, Y!, or AOL, I wouldn't want another company making money off my network. When it was free they got away with it (and rightly so), but now...?
