does a dual/single channel architecture have any connection to the sticks?

meaning...my cheapo backup pc has 2 slots for ram. I use 1 x2gb stick. does it mean that using 1 stick make it single channel just because its 1 stick? or can the mb be a dual channel system no matter the amount of sticks (1,2,4)?

sorry for the dumb question..I got some ram (2x2gb) to use in both slots. they dont post. looking at the specs of the gskill f3-10666cl9d-4gbnq

http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-10666cl9d-4gbnq
(im surprised the mem pack doesnt come sealed)

the motherboard is an asus p5g41t-m lx

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5G41TM_LX/

the specs say dual channel.

not sure what is going on thats the new sticks arent posting. trying to undersdtand what im doing wrong. I put back the old ram and it does post. I did remove the bios battery and see if that would help but no go.

Q6600
gtx660

thanks in advance

That's a Core2-era rig with DDR3? You need the older, "low density" "x8" DDR3 RAM, which is rather hard to find these days. Newer DDR3 simply won't work with those boards, sorry. Can't use just any DDR3, I'm afraid. And unless it's a P45-chipset board, can only use 2GB DDR3 DIMMs too.

Edit: To answer your question, single/dual-channel mode, has to do with which memory slots are populated, there's nothing inherent with the sticks that makes them single- or dual-channel sticks.

That being said, single/dual-channel is not your problem. It's the density of the RAM chips on the DIMMs.

Sorry, I looked at the mobo specs, and it says you can use 2x4GB DDR3. I had forgotten that the G41 chipset is basically identical in terms of RAM specs to the P45.

thanks guys for the help.had food poising the last 2 days so delayed reply. I went and just ordered another 2gb kingston stick that I have already. the store doesnt want to accept the memory back. they say this is an item that once opened cant be returned. I told them to check it that its working well then refund..well see what the manager says
