Tried underarmor as a base layer today

So I tried underarmor ("coldgear"?) leggings out today along with alternatives from other sports brands (reebok, dolfin, etc.) and was sad to find that the underarmor was by far superior. Now I feel like a tool. Regardless, I'm still looking for a warm base layer to go under shorts for running or under pants on snow days and need to buy SOMETHING.

Any alternatives to underarmor you would recommend I try before I pull the trigger on these? They're expensive, too =(. There was a thread a while back on underamor alternatives but that was geared towards moisture-wicking warm weather wear whereas I'm looking for something to keep me warm.

a buddy of mine told me that smartwool (i love their socks) makes thermals that are supposed to be pretty nice.

I've heard good things about smartwool.

I usually just go to Road Runner Sports /Dick Pond's to find whatever they have for cheap.

I've got a set from
Under Armor coldgear spent like 60
Asics spent like 30
Road Runner Sports (house brand) spent like 35

The smartwool leggings are even MORE expensive than ua. I appreciate the suggestion though =)

ya, i recently caught the under armor bug myself. super pricey, but im reminded of why i paid when i work out in it.

I know someone who is in the sports apparel industry, he says the knock off ones in Wal-Mart are made of the
exact same material, he says UA does not have a patent on the fabric they use

Smartwool makes great stuff. You'll find a lot of back-packers that swear by their stuff, and no-one abuses gear more than them.

REI branded long-underwear, tights, running tights, etc...

For cold weather, I'll wear a base layer of Pearl Izumi tights. Thin spandex tights if it's not too cold or fleece lined thicker tights.

Then I wear a pair of Sugoi running tights over them. Either a breathable technifine pair or if it's really cold a windproof pair.

The athletic wear will likely be pretty thin and breathable.
You'll probably have to look into pajama-type wear to get the warmer material. (see LL Bean)

I'm looking for the same thing myself. I exercise outside at night.
Tried on a pair of Nike DryFit leggings while shopping last weekend. Wearing tights was bizarre sensation ... you grow accustomed after a few minutes. They seemed really tight and might not be warm enough if worn outdoors under pants. Better than nothing, but I thought I could do better so I left them there. Store wanted $50 for them.

if its popular it must be worthless. There's obviously a better product available that nobody knows about that cost's 50% less.

There is actually stuff that's just as good. However, those companies don't market the hell out of it like Underarmor.
