It uses a database to keep track of the changes you make to your pictures. It doesn't change them directly. I can see that it can be useful to make different kinds of photo albums though. However, if you got a new computer and didn't use the program's backup function you would lose your changes. Seems like it fits into Google's plans for world domination somehow...
 
IMO Thumbs+ 7 is a much better program for organizing your photos and creating a database

however its not free
