Have you ever been in a situation where you don't know what application can handle a file? Maybe because it's without any extensions, or it just doesn't make sense?
This freeware tool can help!
TrIDNet is a utility designed to identify file types from their binary signatures. While there are similar utilities with hard coded rules, TriID has no such rules. Instead, it is extensible and can be trained to recognize new formats in a fast and automatic way.
TrIDNet uses an XML-based database of definitions which describe recurring patterns for supported file types.
You can help creating new definitions! Just run the TrIDScan module against a number of files of a given type. The program will do the rest.
TrID's database of definitions now cover over 1000 different file types, thanks to many contributors who have sent me their defs. Over 130 bitmap formats, about 100 audio/music file types, and many many compressor/archivers are recognized.
You can look at the complete list here: http://mark0.ngi.it/soft-trid-deflist.html
There are both a command line (TrID) and a GUI (TrIDNet) version available.
If you make a new def, send it to me and I will be more than glad to add it to the public database giving the proper credit.
Bye!
