Tricky PDF from Amazon.(UPDATED>>> I DID GET BOTTED)

I went to google a book called Built to Sell, and one of the links was from Amazon which and said it was a Free PDF download.

So I click on it, it downloads a file and when I open that file my Acrobat reader pops up but with blank pages, thousands of them. Then in redirects my browers to Amazon.com.

Kind of sleazy but I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing.

The trade paper back comes out in a month, I'll get it then but why offer it as free pdf and then re-direct your browser?

It's like something a pirate site would do.

It's probably not from Amazon, it's from some third-party seller who should be reported so Amazon can ban them.

Besides the referral link (done so they can scam some referral money from Amazon), they might also have included a trojan as a gift.

Ah!

oh crap. I didn't know what was going on so I tried downloading it over and over, I had about 15 copies of that so-called PDF in my download folder LOL.

The bot lords thank you. You need to run scans asap.

Fucking bot lords got me. I started the security essential full scan then went out. Came back, my computer was crashed. I restarted it to this in the first few minutes.

It reset my Date to 2072, browsing was hit and miss, HD constantly being accessesed.

I'm reformating now.

I'd be looking at changing your passwords if you had any saved on your computer (like in the browser), also I really hope you didn't attempt to enter a password to log into steam.

I was actually just thinking that, security essentials did NOTHING, no warnings at all.

I even right clicked and scanned that particular file that looks like an acrobat file and it came out clean.

I know not to click the odd .exe I may download by surprise but i'm not sure how to avoid a .exe that looks like a acrobat file if I'm intentionally downloading one.

Last week I had a thread on the Garage section, a guy provided me with links to snowblower parts manual and service. I downloaded 3 acrobat files and they were all good but this latest thing totally caught be by surprise.

I almost never get botted, can't even remember the last time, years ago.

Try a different pdf reader. I like Evince, but just just about anything's better than Adobe. Their products are a honey pot for malware.

I can't tell what you are laughing about. That he chose MSSE or that it didn't catch it? Most people would agree that MSSE is one of the best AV out there and considering the price (Free), it is the best. No AV catches 100% of all malware, viruses.
