Tricky little scheme from Self Checkouts

edro

Lifer
I have not done, and do not intend to do this!
but.....

I was at a LAN party the other night and a guy had a brand new 48x CD-R, 2 x 17" LCD monitors (dual), a new Microsoft mouse, a new Microsoft keyboard, new mouse pad, new speakers.

After talking to him about it all, he said that he just goes to Walmart and peels off a sticky UPC label from something for like $5 and sticks it over the stuff he wants..... then he goes through the self-checkout. He said he had like $20 in all the above listed stuff.

I KNOW THIS IS THEFT, but how much time can he get put away for? He said he was 19. I was like.... dude, it you get caught, you are goin' to Federal Pound Me In The Ass Prison.....

He said "It's not my fault they are stupid."

What do you guys think?

Also, please don't flame ME..... I don't even know the guy.

A few of my friends got caught shoplifting from Kmart and nothing was done, except getting kicked out of the store.

I doubt you would go to prison.

The funny thing is that he said he used a package of Bandaids as the UPC. I was like.... don't they see it is a monitor that is ringing up as a Bandaid? He said, No, he just goes to one where the person is old or stupid looking.....

I did LP for a living when I went to school. We used to chase people down, handcuff them and send them off to jail. People did all sorts of crazy stuff. Down their pants, in the baby carraige, some simply walk out with it. Sometimes I didn't feel like going through the hassle of picking someone up for a $4 item so I'd jingle my keyring and follow them through the store till they ditched the item.

This is obviously theft, and the moderators should lock it up.

I would also doubt the validity of his story. Maybe he's done it with something small, but I serious doubt he did that with a monitor.

you should have grabbed his stuff and say thanks. and left with it. He would have gotten all pissed about you stealing his stuff.

It's assholes like him that make me pay higher prices.

It's been done, I believe there was a blurb about someone doing the samething at costco/price club. They got caught..... grand theft?

Back then, they sell "cheap" $19.99 software, and the guy peeled off the UPC sticker from it and tape it over the Sound Blaster box (it was expensive back then.

He is a liar. I worked for a Kroger store that has U-Scan. Every item has a weight associated with the UPC. If it doesn't match, then the checker has to manually check the item and override the system.

I know that K-Mart has a similar system.

Yeh I thought they actually had a ballpark figure for how much an item is supposed to weigh...

Personally, I like the dude who hands out stickers with the barcode from his shoppers' club card in an attempt to create an uber-shopper. More amusing and not illegal.

If you were going to do that... at least be smart about it. For the 17" LCDs... why wasn't there a cheaper monitor tag on it? Then at least if someone were to question him, it could be debatable on if it was employee error or him. Retard...

Not worth it. These places have cameras. If you're caught switching labels you're gonna get targeted by security. THe second you walk out the door with it boom you're an adult and just caught shoplifting a lot of stuff. It's very stupid.

Retail theft can get you jailtime. All you need is to piss off somebody enough who is willing to press charges.

For those contemplating trying this scheme, ask yourself: Do You really want to go to jail for a few years for a few hundred bucks worth of crap?

BTW, I hope that thief gets caught. His stealing raises MY prices.

lol, they have cameras trained on the self checkout. not to mention they see the prices ring up on their monitors in the security room, so if they do see your cdrom drive ring up for 5 dollars, they'll catch you.

it's not worth it the shame and embarrassment. even if you don't get jail time, you'll prolly get community service and a record.

Yeah.. I don't really see how it could work very effectivly.

I've never been through Wal-Marts self checkout, but the local store here, Fred Meyer, has "U-Scan" machines..

They have people posted watching the video feed from above the scanners, and they can see everything that you ring up on their screen. And if that didn't catch you, after you scan an item.. you have to put it in the bag, which is sitting on some sort of scale.

If you don't put the item in the bag, or the wrong item, etc.. the machine yells and bitches at you to put the item back in the bag, lol.

Wanna know something funny? I saw them reboot one of the U-Scan machines once.

Guess what OS?

Windows 2000 Professional. 😛

well at walmart, the reciepts aren't very descriptive so i can see how this would works, especially since the person watching the door usually doesn't speak english and for the most part isn't very bright(hence why they're watching the door, and not doing returns or something that requires a little more thought).

I know in Texas that they can't stop you from leaving the store, and they can't search your bag. Once you pay for an item and money has exchanged hands, it is tricky since they have accepted his payment for the goods he presented.
