Tricks to fight late-night hunger?

Hey. The main thing that's keeping me from losing weight is late-night hunger. I'm good during the day, but if I have dinner at 6PM, at 8, 9, 10PM I'm sometimes feeling famished. Sometimes a small low-calorie snack like sugar-free Jell-O or a little Rediwhip will do it, but sometimes I need something more substantial. I know late-night calories are the worst because you have no chance to burn them off before you sleep, but if I don't heat something substantial I end up snacking the entire night. I also make sure to have water/tea first to make sure I'm not dehydrated or just thirsty, but I'm often still hungry. Anyone have any tricks or any late-night meals that are low-calorie and filling? Something that would satisfy me without wrecking a day of eating smart?

rice cakes, oatmeal, gritz with margarine, fruits... and I always recommend munching on sunflower seeds.

Oatmeal is the best bet. You want something with a low GI value. Fruit for the most part is bad. Rice cakes are just worthless calories. Never checked grits

Hmm... I'll take a look at the oatmeal... maybe add some maple extract or splenda or something. Yeah, I don't see rice cakes filling me up.

Not my question. I know about losing weight, and I have been drinking plenty of water :)

Any other ideas? Sure-fire ways to curb the hunger?

Stay busy. This works for me more than anything else. Late night hunger is really just the munchies because you're just sitting around doing nothing.

Good tip....but if you're really hungry, drink 2-3 glasses of water and go to bed...just be sure to wake up and get rid of that water later. ;)

Quitting eating is like quitting smoking. Not only do you need to mentally prepare to quit, you also need to change your lifestyle to make it easier. When I gave up the cancer sticks it was necessary to avoid the situations where I normally smoked as that was when the urges were strongest. I quit playing cards, worked out right after meals, etc etc. Do the same, find out what you're doing when the urge to snack is strongest and what you're doing when you're not hungry, then adjust your schedule accordingly.

For a good nighttime snack, try raw celery, carrots or cukes. They're almost calorie-free, filling and best of all, need to be salted to taste okay. They'll force you to drink more and the extra water will help fill you up.

Tried celery but couldn't stand it. Salt makes it taste better? Carrots or cucumbers are better, although the temptation to use homemade dips is very strong ;).

rice cakes is just to keep your mouth busy. That's half the problem. If your body thinnks you're constantly chewing/eating you won't become hunger. try Rice Cakes, sun flower seeds, and chewing gum. I perfer gum the most because it does burn a very small amount of calories while you chew, and if you chew a good flavor and drink some water with it you've got a flavord beverage right there.

What are you doing at these times?

If the case is that you are just at home playing video games/watching tv/on ATOT try to go out and do something active you enjoy. Possibly schedule your workouts in the evenings I find that my appetite goes away after exercise.

Eat dinner later, and have a fruit of something at 6:00.

Well, I'm keeping hydrated (I drink so much water I often have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, which I never had to do in the past), and I try gum (sometimes works, sometimes just makes me hungrier). Once I'm back at school I'll be busier, but working out later isn't a bad idea. I'm more interested in actual foods at this point. I'll give 'em a shot, though. More apples, pears, oatmeal, etc. with teh water, gum, tea.

If you're having trouble falling asleep from hunger, a little protein and fiber before bed will go a long way.

Night calories aren't really bad for the reason that you "don't burn them off," they're bad because going to bed with a full stomach is just stupid if you're dieting and trying to deal with hunger during the day. Save the calories for when you're wide awake and concious that your belly would like to be fed -- if you're dumping a lot of calories in right before bed it makes maintaining a caloric deficit and dealing with the waking hours that much harder.

Yeah, Sludge. I understand and agree. Any suggestions on that fiber and protein? Piece or two of cold cuts for protein?

frosted mini wheats are pretty good for fiber and tasty too.

Also, I recently packed on 15 or so pounds, and I attribute it to my increased coke (beverage) intake. Probably replacing my nicotine cravings with caffeine. Supposedly a can of soda a day will add 10 pounds a year, all else being equal. Since I was drinking probably 6-8 cans a day, well, my new waist is no surprise.

steamed rice with some salt and pepper is quite filling for the calories involved, and tuna from the can (canned in spring water, not oil, and without mayo .. substitute mustard or hot sauce if you need to mix it with something) has mad protein. Not that tuna and rice mix, IMO.

Easier said than done, buddy :) You keep going around for 3 hours on a painfully empty stomach :p

---------- Xiety says -----------

I don't understand how all fruits can be good for losing weight. Some fruits have a ton of sugar in them... sugar = bad, eh?

---------- Cheers :) ----------

Seems a bit fishy in the "sugar is bad" intuition of modern dieting. Fruits generally have pretty low glycemic values, though.
