tricks for improving memory?

I've always had a terrible memory, especially short-term. what are some real ways to improve memory ability, or just ways to help remember a certain thing?
 
For names, the best thing is to say it right away after hearing it, and saying it often in conversation.

My memory sucks as well tho', so I forget to follow my own advice, cuz, well, I forget...
 
Everytime something important happens or is siad, grasp a framing hammer firmly in your hand and bash it against your opposite thumb while repeating what you need to remember.

Now, everytime you think of the pain, you'll remember why it hurts.
 
im personally waiting for when they can implant a card reader in your brain and you can just pop in your phone book memory card, your calander and appointments card, your porn cards......whoops ie said too much!
