Tribes2 on P4 Northwood

Hello,

I'll be upgrading within the next couple of months. Has anyone tried Tribe2 on a Northwood. I will choose the best Tribe2 performer between a Thoroughbred and a Northwood. Anyone have hands on experience with an XP and a Northwood?

I'm worried it will be something like Silent Sam, where even the Northwood gets crub stomped. If the Northwood is a clear winner, I will likely go for it. I appreciate all the input.

Silent Sam? Do you mean Serious Sam? I think the video card is going to matter much more than the processor choice. I think either processor will be able to saturate the video card.

I think people need to realze that after you get over 1.5ghz or so, the graphics card is much more important than the processor, especially with todays newest processors. Ifyou want high framerates, consider backing off a little on cpu speed to get at least a GeForce 3, possibly a GeForce 4 if you can afford it.

butch84, you took the words right out of my mouth. 🙂

Rectalfier, I still do think you should go with Northwood (assuming that at the time you buy one there isn't something better out for cheaper) since you'll be able to do some massive overclocking (unless you don't overclock of course) which usually benefits your gaming performance quite a bit (IMO).

And that's a very valid concern and one I had too. The truth is though that Serious Sam runs really fast on my Northwood and the extra 200 MHz overclock helps it even more.

Also I run at very high detail levels so I'm mostly video card limited in all of my games including Serious Sam, so if you like high eye-candy you probably won't notice a difference between the two processors.

haha, that's exactly what I was thinking.

Yes XP and northwood work great together.

I play T2 on my P4 (non-Northwood) and that game runs faster on my rig than on XP's...the title likes bandwidth.

I realize most games are video card limited right now. However, my friends XP1700 with DDR runs Serious much faster than my Tbird 1.2 with SDR. I already have a Geforce3@500 speeds.

I know that the Athlon XP and Northwood are very close in performance, but some applications seem to favor one or the other. I mainly play Tribes2, so if Tribes2 runs significantly faster on P4 than the Athlon XP, I will skip the thoroughbred and get a 1.6a or 1.8a to tide me over untill Hammer comes out.

Flokster, is your opinion from hands on experience? If anyone else knows that the P4 performs better than an Athlon for Tribes2, I will pick one up this weekend.

thanks.

Hmm, I'm interested too. I've already upgraded twice for T2. If there's a big diff between the two chips I'll follow suit. Running T2 with everything maxed is my holy grail. 😎

I know from experience only. I have no charts or graphs but this is what I do know is a fact:

1) Tribes 2 is an SSE2 optimized title

2) Tribes 2 is a bandwidth hungry title

draw your own conclusions but these are facts...

I play a bout an hour of t2 a week...used to play it a ton when it came out....& since my P4 is .18, I can only assume the new P4's (.13) are even faster...

I had experience with T2 on both a XP and P4 Northwood... I must say, that I hated T2 on the XP... Random crashes killed me... When I put in the P4, everything ran perfectly, and I stopped getting crashes....

T2 seems to like the P4 combo better in my perspective.... Sometimes the XP would run for hours, and sometimes just for a few minutes...

FPS... not including T2.... because I had a wierd bug that wouldn't let it go above 64FPS.... both chips nearly allways maxxed it at 64fps, and if they didn't it was because of latency issues on the network...

Its comparing a P4-2G, and a XP 1.533Ghz or XP1800 whatever you want to call it...

The P4 works better, in all the benches I ran, but not by much...
I ran UT, Q3, 3DMark2k, and 3DMark2k1

The P4-2G is on a DDR board, so, I imagine that the RDRam would run that much better...

If memory serves me correctly, Spook still hasn't gotten over his Socket A VIA trauma, which may be why he's having "random crashes" when playing games.

Rectalfier, I suggest you get a 1.6A and ASUS P4T-E (Rambus), since gaming is usually better on an RDRAM system and since this board will be able to handle extreme overclocking (so I've heard) up to 2.4GHz from a 1.6A CPU.

I'm over it..... I don't have any Via/AMD combos any more.... 🙂

But seriously, my problems MOSTLY, revolved around D3D apps... OpenGL ran pretty good...

T2 is a bit buggy though, and was the exception to my OpenGL... I'm was in a clan too, and many of my teammates with AMD/VIA combos had issues... random drops and such... Allthough not all... seems to be that Slot A Athlons were pretty solid...

If you do consider, a XP, consider a SIS or ALI, and maybe the NVidia chipsets... VIA is just buggy...

I would like to go the rambus root, as it performs better. Where did you hear of this overclock? That would be running the 1.6a at a 150mhz FSB, wouldn't that be too much for most rambus?

C'mon guys. I am happy with my Geforce3 @ 220/500mhz.

I just want to know which processor performs better in Tribes2. Athlon XP or P4?
