I haven't seen anyone mention this, so I thought I'd point it out to the Tribes 2 fans (or those looking to try it). The article was up on Kotaku a few days ago.

Basically, there's a super easy way to play Tribes 2 online now. Other than that, I think the rest is pretty easy to figure out.

Sorry if it's a repost.

I really wish they would develop a worthy successor to tribes 1 and 2. The last tribes game, arena??, was almost criminal they way they butchered the franchise.

hmm

so this is essentially a community driven replacement for the master server that was taken down this past November, and should remove the requirement for a CD key as well, making the game completely free for anyone who wants to try...

don't think the community would be allowed to get too large before the suits bring down the hammer...

Well, I'd say it's pretty sweet until (if) that happens. I wanted to try out Tribes, but didn't want to go through the hassle required to play it online. This makes it much easier.

If only I had my mouse on me. :p

I loved Tribes one, but nothing after that did it for me. I built such awesome defensive fortifications, didn't care about the actual player combat much. The mods that allowed for a metric ton of defensive improvements were AWESOME!

It was Tribes: Vengeance, which I bought for $7 at a local store. What's sad about it is that I personally liked the look and feel of it but thought the weapons were awful (other than the Spinfusor and Chaingun). (I'd played Tribes 2 some before that.) For some reason the community completely rejected it though I don't think it was about the weapons. As far as I know the game was NEVER patched. As I understand it, a patch had either been completed or was almost completed when the company that owned the game or had distribution rights ordered it canceled.

Could the franchise be revived? I'm really not very optimistic. Since the quality of online multiplayer FPS games has only gotten worse over time as a result of consolization, I doubt that any studio would be willing to do it properly. Perhaps Valve could do it, but why would they want to.

As much as I also wish for a true Tribes successor, Legions isn't looking that hot to me. Quite a few guys over at Tribalwar were in beta, and some of them like it, but it's not garnering much notice as a Tribes substitute.

And although Garage Games was founded by some of the key developers of the original franchise, something or other has caused many of them to bail out of that organization since the inception of this.

By the way, I also thought that Tribes: Vengeance was reasonably fun, but as you suggested, no it never received a significant patch, and it was only shortly after the release that Vivendi gave notice that they no longer intended to develop the patch. This, plus a VERY WEAK effort of even promoting or acknowledging the game just further splinter the hopefuls. The box art was even horrible. They had essentially written it off before it was even released. :(

My current best hope is that they sell the IP to someone who can recognize and support the great sport that Tribes is. Valve would be a good candidate, as their development prowess is still pretty high, and their new content distribution and server support would be a godsend.

has anyone had success with Tribes Next? Tribes 1 & 2 were probably 2 of my favorite games of all time.

PS. Any new updates on Empire: Legions?

Tribes Vengeance was actually kind of entertaining and captured some of the fun of the original Tribes. But it had some balancing and exploit issues that were never fixed because the patch was cancelled.

Tribes 1 and 2 with Shifter mod was some of the best time I had playing FPS games. I tried playing T2 a year or two ago while at home (disc was left at my parent's house and their computer is my old 1.2 Ghz Tbird) but didn't know my login credentials.

Hah, someone else here is from Tribalwar. Ive been a member there on those forums for over a decade... and on planet-tribes before they changed it. Been to a couple UVA Lans, was in the T2 beta. Have several MP3's of songs with Tribes sounds and famous shoutcast bits. Played on the OGL. Tribes is the best game of all time, imo. I miss it so.

And no, sadly there doesnt seem to be a real successor.

edit, btw, mods sucked. Base is where it was at.
