Tribes 2 - Questions and Comments

Well simply put, I expected a lot more. I'm glad I bought it but damn it just doesn't seem like a really quality game. The graphics aren't very good and to get them good you need to turn the detail WAY up and it runs like crap. So all the performance issues aside.

Inventory - Loadout stuff. Argh I don't like this at all. Why can't they just have the standard favorite like in Tribes 1? Maybe have a slightly changed version but in Tribes 1 I had my presets and I'd go in to station, press f1-f5, and I'd be done. If I needed a change I could simply select it in the inventory. But I don't even understand this new system. All I see is that you select your preset with numpad and ctrl-numpad (or maybe it's shift-numpad don't remember). And the only way I found to chance anything is with shift-numpad (or ctrl-numpad don't remember). And all I can change is the damn packs and then the measly two turrets or something. Can I just goto the regular inventoy screen like Tribes 1 instead of this pre loadout bs? And I don't even try putting up defense because of this crap give me a damn inventory screen!

Planes! Cool ideas but they are hard as hell to control. 3rd person helps a little but it's still very hard and I've been trying for like 20 minutes practicing with even the scout. The ground vehicles aren't too bad. Pretty fun too. Any tricks to controlling them? I wish it was easier to go up and down. And this is a very small complaint but damn it's way harder to get into the planes! In Tribes 1 you could drop down, get flag, hop in. This one you have to be RIGHT on top of it to get in...

Bots. I wish you could command your team. I was a fatty with mortars and stuff and I kept asking for a ride but appearantly they don't understand your commands 🙁.

Weapon models. Especially the laser rifle. Wtf kind of huge blocky thing is that? The sensors and stuff aren't too good either.

There's some more than I can't remember.

It sounds like a lot of complains, and well it is. I still like the game but damn it just doesn't seem right. I was hoping for more like Tribes 1.

I agree 100%... this game has yet to impress me. 🙁 I think I'll start playing it again after a few more patches come out...

Im definitely enjoying Tribes 2 so far but agree with some of what you mentioned.

Have yet to be that impressed with the graphics. They are pretty nice but dont seem proportionate to the system it requires to run them. I play at 1024x768x32 with all the settings on max - graphics are good but not mind blowing. Would imagine they look fairly poor on any system they have to be turned down on.

Weapon models were also the first thing I noticed, some of them just look bad. Have a hard time driving the vehicles too but I dont consider that a negative feature. Nice to play a FPS that you cant just jump into and actually need to learn a few things. Am a very good UT player but Im having a lot of difficulty getting decent at Tribes 2, never played the first. Is refreshing though.

Havent tried a game with bots yet, stupid if you cant control them at all.

Anyone know how to benchmark with Tribes 2? Know the show FPS command but is there a timedemo type thing like Q3? Tried posting on the official boards but the question was instantly swallowed up by 100s of angry posts bitching about performance.

press the numpad enter to change your loadout... check your key reference card more carefully. 😛

LOL thanks dc. Well it actually wasn't enter since I redid my keys but it was Inventory. I didn't bother to look much at the documentation since I was pumped to play it. Well now I guess the loadouts are okay but still not as good as Tribes 1 but at least it is tolerable. Still don't like how the turrets and stuff have to be placed.

Oh yeah I hate when I use mouse wheel to scroll weapons its does a Unhanlded Exception error

I'm sick of hearing certain people complain about how the graphics suck compared to Q3. Q3 uses SMALL indoor maps whereas tribes 2 uses HUGE outdoor maps. T2 uses way more polygons.

I enjoy this game a lot so far...

press enter in the numpad so you can customize each individual load-out then select it by pressing the #.

the more you start using the vehicals the easier it is to control.

yeah I agree the laser rifle doesn't look that good but try choosing the non-human race and the rifle looks a lot different.

I'm waiting for the Renegades mod for T2.

Heh. Funny to hear the disappointment from the peeps who were chanting "T2! T2! T2!" last week when others were saying that B&W was gonna rock.

The B&W threads are full of funny stories and the Tribes threads (here and elsewhere) are full of complaints. How many patches have they released so far for T2? Every time I look at VE, it's seems to have patch news. Sheesh.

The only thing B&W needs fixing is the inability to skip the early tutorial stuff.

Im one of the few who is impressed by t2, the graphics are great at 1600x1200. Yeah, 30 FPS at this res is good, very playable. One comment though, this game has some video card issues because it only runs at 40 FPS in 1024x768 all textures same. I dont know how this is possible but it is, there needs to be some serious tweaking done on this game.

BTW I have
Radeon 64
Win 2k
AMD 1.05 Ghz
MSI K7T pro 2-a

Yeah I know switching between different resolutions has very little effect on fps compared to virtually every other game. Sometimes it's just a 5fps difference.

30fps at 1600x1200? Nice! 32 bit color, max details?

Well good thing is the Radeon seems good, maybe better than Geforce2. It seems I seem more people with performance problems that have Geforce2 (well I have perf probs toobut I do have a cel 550 🙂). Also, it seems users are getting just as good as performance with the Radeon in win2k as in win98se. I wish it had a timedemo feature so sites could use it as a benchmark.

i Would luv to be able to use my joystick to fly the crafts in the game. other than that it seems okay, nothng mind blowing yet. i prefer CS voice commnad method tho. Would be nice to get in a organized 64 player game. that might be great.

Akaz

I like the voice commands. Well they're just very similar to Tribes 1. If you haven't played Tribes 1 then they will seem confusing and CS will seem better but once you get to memorize them it's really good.

I bought T2 instead of B&W. Raising creatures and teaching them things dosent sound fun compared to fast paced multiplayer combat.
