Tribes 2, me, my puter, and YOU!

A lil backround first...

I've played Tribes 1 for quite a long time now, and am currently a member of the retired team 5150 (former #1 on OGL for 4 months). I run a V3 3k and a Duron 900.

I am looking to upgrade my video card.. I have a budget of about 150$. Im sorta lookin for suggestions/recommendations. I know quite a bit about the gameplay of T2 (was on Beta team), but no idea what card would be best for it. Help!

Im also kinda curious to how ppl who havent played T1 perceive T2... T1 has a very close and segregated community and we generally shun away ppl who play other games (damn everquest $&$#ers). Everything about T2 the community in general compares to T1 (from graphics to gameplay), and from that we see an amazing game coming. The only computer game i reallly got into was T1 so its hard for me to draw comparisons to other games.

T2 has me very excited because T1 was never really a hit, and from the looks of it T2 will be. T1 had about 200 teams competing on OGL CTF at its peak, and I would expect T2 to reach somewhere around 500-1000 teams (crazy much). In T1 where top 20 was considered elite it will be more like top 100 in T2 (holy shazbot). I think im lucky as hell to be on the team which is the main contender for #1 in T2 as well as the many tournys scheduled.

So tell me me what video card i should get! And if you cant atleast tell me what you think about T2 in terms of gameplay, graphics, ect.

I can't wait for tribes 2 myself. My bro bought a radeon 64 MB DDR board. He got it for about 192 bucks. But for your budget, the only card I think would fit would be a Geforce MX. unless you can find a GTS card 32 MB DDR for that price. Check out Hotdeals for that. Our clan is on OGL still. We play open arena and are currently second. We do not expect any team that is out there now to be able to match us in arena.

Anyways I thknka geforce MX will be your best bet given your budget. Tribes 2 is an open Gl based game and it will support hardware T & L.

you can get an MSI starforce 815 for 145 shipped. its a geforce2 gts 32mb, and i think it got tv out as well. should be in the hot deals section, if not just look on price watch

If you're up to it, try looking around the FS/FT forums. Lots of GTS's go on there for ~$150 shipped. newegg also has them at a great price.

Why not wait until the game is out. You will then have the reccommendations of hands-on reviewers & the publishers. Also, video cards are bound to be cheaper (and probably new models0 by then. Don't lock yourself in now, no reason.

I'm sure you could get a Radeon 32 DDR for that price. You could even get a Radeon LE and o/c it and enable hyper-z (though it's on already in OGL I believe) so it's like a Radeon 32 retail just much cheaper. A GTS would be good too if you can find one in your budget.

Or there's the Kyro 2. Anandtech just did a review on it and personally I think it is really good. It doesn't have T&L but if you look at the benchmarks it even beats the GF2 ultra sometimes. Though we of course don't know how it would run Tribes 2. It has a ESP of $149 but after its been out for even a couple weeks I wouldn't doubt if it was around $125.

I would highly consider getting a Kyro2 card, its exactly at your price..has great benchmarks from the article on Andandtech and offers 64mb of ram compared to the 32 a comparable priced geforce2 gts would offer.

well.... that kyro loks pretty good... kinda up there with the Ultras and Pros..... around $150... just my two cents.. check out the review on the front page of anandtech

I have a feeling no matter what graphical features are available with T2, there will still be those hardcore competitors who turn all features off to make the game as fast/smooth as possible (e.g. as some have done with Quake 1, 3).

Props to 5150, KZ, and western alliance. Sorry Adul I don't know SoD, I think I got out b4 you guys showed up. Im an old noper, if anyone still remembers us. Anyway a lot of the beta testers said it runs fin on a geforce 256. So an MX should do fine. Its an open GL game, so just about any current card should do ok. See you boyz on the field.
