One of my favorite groups from back in the day has lost a founding member, Phife Dawg, dead at the young age of 45:

Dawg had been suffering from type 1 diabetes, which he was diagnosed with in 1990, according to reports. He also underwent a kidney transplant in 2008.

Dawg cofounded the group A Tribe Called Quest in 1985 with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. They were best known for songs such as "Scenario," "Can I Kick It?" and "Award Tour."

I started listening to ATCQ and also De La Soul, and both groups interested me more than the popular ghetto rap hard stuff like NWA, Public Enemy, Geto Boys and Wu Tang. While those groups were worth a listen for driving, Tribe and De La were always playing once I got home.

I'd say my favorite album from Tribe was 'Midnight Marauders'. It had no radio heavy hits, but damn .. it was just solid from start to finish, and never got proper credit for its quality simply because it didn't have a 'Scenario' type track to make people buy it.
