Treo 650

Rather then reading reviews on amazon, or anywhere else, I figured I would post here.

Currently my company will reimburse me for a treo or a blackberry and pay the monthly unlimited data costs for it. I am leaning towards a Treo 650 from either verizon or cingular. Who here has or had a treo 650? what do you guys think of it?

get the treo 650 from cingular, CDMA is officially teh SUCK. GSM is way better IMO, but in rural areas with T-Mo and what was ATTWS the coverage was shoddy, but now that ATTWS and Cingular merged GSM coverage is a bit better. it really rules to have a phone you can use overseas with a simple SIM change.

Does your company have a Blackberry Enterprise Server or a GoodLink server? Personally, I hate the Treo, but you'll get a bunch of people who use it to play games and listen to mp3's who will say it's great. I don't think it has any place as a real business tool (well, without a GoodLink server or EAS I guess), personally.

Both. BES 4.0 has wireless syncing and so does Good. One plan I have is to use the bluetooth on it, to daisy chain to my bluetooth laptop. Tis way I get internet (slow but faster then 56k) on the train.

In that case, I'd personally choose a blackberry, but if you want the gee-whiz features of the Treo, go for it. With Good, it's not as bad of an email device as without (without, it's absolutely worthless).

EDIT: I believe the new Blackberries with BT can be used as a modem as well.

BTW, the last client I had who got a Treo 650 because it looked cool ditched it after a week for a Blackberry. :laugh:

Don't forget to look in to the Samsung i730 from Verizon. It's supposedly a mediocre phone, but an excellent PDA. Even though the bluetooth/modem protocols are "disabled" people have figured out how to get around it.

Man, I don't think anyone in the Tri State area has any in stock. I was talking to the phone guy at Datavision Friday and he said most stores only got 5 on release and aren't getting shipments again until August. I've been trying to find a store with one on display to play with! :| I'd wait for it to go down in price and for Exchange 2k3 SP2 to come out if your company uses Exchange (and will support the new EAS features).

I need a new phone (the 3 year old one is going to die on me soon) but they're allegedly going to have a camera version out in 60 days and there's the possibility that Verizon will upgrade to WM5. I'd wait around for that. Plus it gives Samsung time to work out all of the bugs they tend to leave in new phones.

I really want to get the phone for the EVDO package. Then I could cancel my land line/DSL. The other option is if Verizon would ever get their FIOS service in my area. I would be all over that.

CDMA still sucks

CDMA is two years newer than GSM, handles more calls per tower, allocates more bandwidth per call, can scale to significantly higher data speeds, and is currently worlds more secure than GSM will ever be.

Of course, if you'd rather use a bureaucratically-controlled technology that is only in use because European governments couldn't stand the thought of using US-developed technology, that's fine. GSM is, essentially, a re-worked version of TDMA. Much better than TDMA, but not the same technological generation as CDMA.

My brother just got a Treo 650 on Sprint. Not bad, great little toy... Unlimited data for $20/mo i think.... :thumbsup:

It's the least bit of vaseline they can offer you after assraping you on the cost of the hardware itself :thumbsdown:

I have read that RIM is under fire because of patent dispuits, and if I read correctly, they may not be allowed to sell/support blackberries in the U.S. soon.
