Sen. Trent Lott to resign by end of year

Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, plans to resign his seat before the end of the year, congressional and White House officials said Monday.

Lott, 66, scheduled two news conferences in his home state later in the day to reveal his plans. According to congressional and White House officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of the announcement, Lott intends to resign effective the end of the year.

No reason for Lott's resignation was given, but according to a congressional official, there is nothing amiss with Lott's health. The senator has "other opportunities" he plans to pursue, the official said, without elaborating.

Lott is the 6th Republican Senator to announce his retirement this year. Rats deserting a sinking ship? More like rats SINKING the ship, then deserting.
I guess the Republicans will now find a whole new lott of prospective candidates who will try and destroy the country.

The reason is that beginning next year, departing Congress members need to wait 2 years before they can be lobbyists, getting out now ensures Trent will get his lucrative lobbying gig now.

Because Trent Lott loves America that much.

Maybe he (and the other Republicans that are also leaving) don't want to be historically associated with the Congress as the Dems drag it into the single figure approval rating for the first time in history.

Good. He's one of the problems in the GOP. He's lost his Conservative ways and it's time for him to leave. I just hope he takes a few of the other pretenders with him so we can get a crop of real Conservatives in the GOP.

I am all atwitter just waiting to see what magnificent opportunities Trent plans to Pursue. After all the Lott famdamily fortune was somewhat depleted when Katrina struck and the insurance company weaseled out of paying.

But all in all, GOP Senate majority and minority leaders don't seem to last long in government during the GWB era. First Frisk quit the Senate and now Trent Lott. Will Mitch McConnell be next? After all, ole Mitch is up for re election in 2008, and may just find himself in the unemployment line early in 2009.

Maybe we can get a good liberal democrat occupying Trent Lott's seat after some GOP appointed patsy has to stand for general election.

Don't worry, a lot of Republicans now in Congress will not be associated with it come 2008 Election :D

Wait I thought those strikes were just to distract us from BJ's. Your sig argument doesn't make sense.

We always bombed Iraq, strangely I don't see them advocating an invasion.

If you honestly believe that you are a sap.

From CNN:

A senior Republican source close to Lott said one reason for Lott's decision to resign is the new lobbying restrictions on former lawmakers.

A law kicks in on January 1 that forbids lawmakers from lobbying for two years after leaving office. Those who leave by the end of 2007 are covered by the previous law, which demands a wait of only one year.

Lott, the Republican whip, was elected last year to a fourth term in the Senate. His term lasts until 2012.

He's ready to get some money from the private sector. That's it.

Do you understand the word coercion or do I have to link it for you? Not necessarily by means of force, but nevertheless a coercion of politics. I've been reading for a while and thought that it's funny you of all people would call anyone a troll.

It'd be like hoping for a nice new Lawrence Welk type album to come out from a rap label.

The Republican Party has become a party to serve a certain group of Americans (and to market itself to the rest of America as something else).

It's going to take a lot (not a Lott?) for the party to offer a new type of candidate.

But here's a hint - the calls from righties above for 'real' conservatives are not the solution; they need a return to the moderate and liberal republicans of the past.

You will *always* hear these calls for 'real' conservatives; you heard them in 2000, when George Bush was their poster boy for 'real' conservatives, their dream candidate.

The Eisenhowers are the candidates that worked better for them; the Reagans and George W. Bushes and other supposed 'real' conservatives are the problems.

The 'conservative wing of the republican party has really lost its way for decades. They brought us the Gilded Age a century ago; after the progressives helped fix that they brought us the Great Depression; after they fought all of FDR's reforms like Social Security that reduced elder poverty from 90% to 10%, they brought us the McCarthy era and the intensification of the cold war; and since Reagan they've brought us an unprecedented transfer of wealth from the bottom 80% of Americans to the top 1%, and new debt.

They're just bankrupt - morally, policy-wise... all they can do now is to make up demons that they're the only solution for.

"The democrats will eat your babies, but we'll stop them!" Unfortunately - that sort of paranoia works well.

I don't know what Balt's answer will be but my answer is that congress is not stopping the policies of GWB. Which congress can't do while the GOP filibusters everything congress tries to do in the Senate.

Since the election of 2006 was basically the American people's mandate against GWB, the question is how can the GOP win in 2008 by fighting tooth and nail to keep GWB policies in place? Does the GOP think the American people are so stupid as not to notice what the GOP is doing?

Kucinich (my favored presidential candidate) is too small to eat more than one baby.

People disapprove of Congress as a whole, not necessarily their state or district's Representatives and Senators. Most likely they would like to see Congress take some measure of control back from the Executive Branch after the Republican Congress repeatedly just rubber-stamped whatever Bush wanted. Congress is currently able to do little more than obstruct Bush, however, because they don't have to votes to do anything else.

So who gets blamed, the party elected to try to change things or the party trying to prevent Congress from carrying out the will of the American people? Try to figure that one out for yourself.

There are rumors floating around the 'net that the Lott retirement was triggered by a gay-prostitute scandal that Larry Flynt was about to break. We shall see . . .
