TrendNet TEG-S80G 8-Port Gigabit Switch
$19.99

B&M at Micro Center, don't know if they will ship this one, or for how much. IMO this is a decent basic gigabit switch. It is the nicer one with metal enclosure, not the plastic one which is the normal "hot deal" at this price.

i used to have a dlink switch and it died. ive had this trendnet model for years now and it has been completely transparent throughout that time.

I paid $25 for this about a year ago. I have 7 out of the 8 ports filled, and it has worked without any issues (as you would expect a hub to work). It seems fast, comparable to more expensive switches I use at work.

Anybody run one of these Green switches on a Killwatt meter and compared to a Dlink or whatever?

FWIW, I have this switch in my home office. It has 3 PCs, 2 printers and a router connected to it. Has worked flawlessly for 2+ years. Doesn't even get warm and there's no fan so it's silent. Even has keyhole slots on the back so you can hang it on a wall/side of desk. Not a single issue with it. A++++

Wow... It comes with rubber feet as an accessory! Glad I didn't need to pay extra for those :)

the teg-s8g (plastic case, same guts) uses 1.6w on my kill-a-watt watching netflix ...

my dlink dgs2208 uses 3.8...

Stuff I have that is on 24/7/365 I tend to pay attention to the juice. During the summer you pay twice, once for the device, and once for the AC to cool the device.

^yup

I can confirm that my TEG-S80G uses about 1.6w with 5 ports being used. And it's much cooler than the circa 2002 100Mb switch it replaced.

the difference between 1.6 and 3.8 is very small economically, even when a/c is factored

At my electric rate of $0.15 per KWh, that would take nearly 7 years to pay itself off.

It would also be a cheap way to upgrade to gigabit Ethernet if you don't already have it. Modern HDDs (let alone SSDs) are held back by 100Mbit if you do any decent amount of file transfers between machines on the LAN.

exactly. point is, dont buy just to have lower power usage. either way, its not going to run up your bill and if it warms your room up then you have an amazing house.

Also we still have a couple older switches that are more than a little warm while running, so nothing like the low power of these new green switches.
