This is a limited time Shell Shocker special from Newegg, available from 3:00PM - 5:59PM PST, 01/19/12.

Trendnet TEG-S8G
8-port
10/100/1000
$19.99 with free shipping

I have this switch and it works. Don't know what else to say about a network switch. 😕 I may pick up another one or two for spares, in case I ever host LAN parties again.

I remember buying the non-Green version of this switch, for $22 shipped from Newegg. I bought a bunch of them, still have two in boxes, and one in service.

Been working great for a number of years, seems pretty reliable to me.

I've had a Netgear switch, in the silver/white plastic casing, fail on me pretty badly after a few months. These metal Trendnet switches hold up much better.

(I know it doesn't really mean much, but I've always been partial to the metal-cased switches, for some reason, I believe that they work better. They certainly don't overheat like the plastic switches do.)

Edit: I looked at the pictures more closely, and can see that this one is NOT metal. Pass.

2 out of 5 eggsFlaky gigabit

Pros: Cheap, 8 port gigabit
Worked just fine initially connected to multiple devices at multiple speeds, including 3 @ gigabit.

Cons: Bought a Shuttle XS35V2 w/ a JMicron JMC250 gigabit adapter, it refused to connect at 1 Gig, and 100 MBps caused intermitted BSODs.
Tried multiple cables, no change, multiple settings/drivers/BIOS no change.
Finally changed the switch for another smaller gigabit switch I had and it synced in a heartbeat at 1 gig.

So in the end it was the fault of the switch. Recommend spending a couple buck more so avoid this hassle
Hmm, curious.

Hmm, curious.

That's weird. I just returned a msi motherboard because it would flake out during large file transfers over the network and I have a trendnet switch. But it also locked up a couple times during windows install and another motherboard using the same realtek gigabit chip seems to work fine.

I'm actually pretty surprised its even possible for a switch to cause BSOD.

FYI, I have three of these switches that are all different versions:
1) non green old. (several years old, probably 5 or more) Has huge wall wart, heavier, power draw on Kill-a-Watt is about 5-6x more than the other two.

2) non green new (probably 2-3 years old?) skinny "sideways" wall wart designed to allow other wall warts to plug into a standard 2x socket wall plate.

3) A green one that as best as I can tell is COMPLETELY identical to #2, except for the case colors. I took them apart and they look identical inside. The "green" designation looks to be just a marketing thing.

They all "work", but the newer ones draw a lot less power, the Kill a Watt bounces between 0 and 2 watts depending on network traffic. The old one with the giant wall wart starts ~5 watts and goes up from there.

In for 1. I have a 5-port version that isn't quite as ... portly.. as I'd like, and having a second will provide some pleasant flexibility as to useage.
