TRENDnet 8-Port Gigabit Switch 16.71 a/r

This seems like a good deal. It appears to be an extension of the same deal that was previously offered through other vendors (Buy.com, Newegg, etc.). But this ProVantage place actually has it in stock. Has anyone dealt with this vendor before?

Can anyone shed any light on the features? Is there something limited or ugly about it? The quick specs all sound good. 5-year warranty, too. You don't see that too often anymore. I was figuring that my next network upgrade would be an 8-port gigabit router, but I could just park this behind the router instead, and keep the two function separate. That makes for more flexibility.

Anyway, thanks tjmjr for the post.

My knowledge of networking is.. lacking. Could I plug my 10/100 broadband router into one of these to provide internet connectivity and DHCP, and have two machines connected to the gigabit switch sharing files at 1000 MBit (between each other, not the internet, obviously)?

I'm thinking this would be good for my HTPC since I offload transcoding to a different machine, but only if I could realize the speeds on the internal LAN with the router connected.

ProVantage is good, but they sure have an UGLY web site, always have. I have ordered some stuff. They keep a lot of stuff in stock.

Yes, Router->Gig Switch->Gig sharing computers

yes the pc's connected to the gigabit switch will transfer files at max. 1000 mbit, but the internet will not be any faster. Plus, unless you routinely transfer LARGE files between the pc's, you are unlikely to notice a significance difference compared to using a 10/100 switch.

Sounds good. I am I/O limited during certain transcoding operations, since my HTPC stores the recordings but my desktop (with a dual core) does the transcoding. Especially if I have to demux an MPEG-2 to encode (such as using something like MeGUI to transcode x264), you'll peg a 100 mbit connection.

The second issue I hope to fix with this is that HD content stutters across BeyondTV Link when someone else in the house is using the internet. I realize those streams are maybe 20-30 MBit MAX, but somehow the overhead kills things.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I have used Provantage before, as they seem to be the only vendor I found that carried the USRobotics USR997933 8-port Gigabit switch at a good price. Their shipping has been reasonable, and pretty quick. Ordered 2 of them at 2 different times, and no problems either time.

I don't know anything about the switch but we have ordered from Provantage many times and the shipping is fast. My only problem is that ordering multiple items doesn't lower shipping costs. Other than that they have been great vendor.

Just for fun, I checked again and now the price shows $38.71 (with 30 in stock). Does Provantage usually fluctuate their prices like this?
