I've painted a Federation type starship for my portfolio. It's still very much unfinished, but the shape of the starship and major shading is there. I'm just waiting for the black to dry before I touch up the ship and add some stars, maybe a nebula. Tell me what you think.. unless you think it looks bad. ;)

It's fixed now. The folder they are in is set to be shared, but I had moved the file from another one and it retained its nonsharedness :).

Oil paint?

Duo. Water/oil soluble.

Nice... I never realized how hard it is to paint on canvas until I actually tried.

Honestly, I've always thought that profile shots are boring and well, amateurish. You need to paint it in some sort of "action" shot, like it is flying at you at an angle. As for the design itself, it's like a more curvy version of the 1701A.

You mean a Constitution class starship?

You should've added the black last. You'll be cleaning up all the runover paint smudges from now on.

I'd say... try to find a dynamic view of the ship that conveys a feeling of movement and paint it from that perspective. The most important part of a painting is the composition of positive and negative space. You can be a horrible painter but if you can compose in a viewport well it'll look awesome.

Start with trying to sketch a view off the starboard bow at a 30 degree angle. Something different looking. Once you get the sketch down then pencil it into the canvas. Paint the ship, in all detail, then cover it with tape. Then do a wash of the background over the entire piece. Once you're done removed the tape and your ship will be in space. Touch up the ship with lighting and such.

I suppose the most important part is to have fun. Good luck. :)

I agree, it does like kinda like an art deco infused 1701A. I like the color too.

No...It's got the long 'neck' of the A, but everything else is much more rounded. Has the D warp engine arms, though.
