TREK: Starship Enterprise design tested to Mach 5!

For StarTrek fans, the University of Queensland Laser Diagnostics Dept. tested the USS Enterprise in their super-orbital expansion tube - X2. A scale model was placed in the test section and the facility used to generate a high speed gas flow of around 6.6 km/s. This was passed over the Enterprise for a duration of approximately 100 microseconds. They performed similar tests on other models investigating dissociation and ionisation processes which occur during atmospheric re-entry.

it messed up b/c i put it as [here] which added the ] to the link
by the time i just posted and went to fix it, you posted!
hehe

that's one huge space debris to hit the enterprise...

and isn't there almost no air in space?..unless it goes through a gas cloud..?? 😕

hah yea, they probably were drunk and wanted to smash stuff at the end of the experiment so they threw a rock into it

hehe

yea, they tested it under atmospheric conditions, but different ships can fly into atmospheres (nx-01 enterprise and voyager). It'd be interesting to see that done, too.

A moving ship meets a stationary object, air makes no difference

Even with no air, theres particles, and since warp 9 sounds pretty fast i'm sure they encounter tons of it....

Whats with the space junk? Its like half the size of the model. I wouldnt call it a normal encounter. More like running into a large asteroid.
