I used to play this game a lot in high school when it came out, 21 years ago. It was, in a lot of ways, a precursor of the RTS games to come. I downloaded it from a local BBS.

It was primarily intended as a multiplayer game but nobody else in my neighborhood had an IBM compatible PC and a modem. I played my dad a couple of times and tried to play my brother but he was only 7 at the time.

Trek 2.8 is a space-war type of strategy game where you control 4 spacecraft and a base. You go out and explore the universe and try to take your enemies out.

So I was thinking about the game yesterday and found it! It's here:

it runs great in DOSBOX.

Runs in CGA with only beeps for sounds but it's still fun after all these years. Took me a while to remember how to beat the AI. (Hint: be aggressive.)

It would be interesting to see if there's a way to get an emulated modem connection out of an IP connection over the Internet.

I'd love to see this updated with modern graphics and Internet multiplayer someday, while keeping the same 2D style gameplay.

hm. After looking it up, it appears that DOSBOX supports modem emulation for multiplayer games. Now to find someone to play...

Wow... use to play this on TI/99 4A computer at home... fun times. :)

Then I *think* Atari released a similar clone on the Atari 5200 - of course with cooler graphics. :)

That was the problem the first time I went looking for the game. It's not Net Trek or EGA Trek, which IIRC, are turn based and have a Star Trek theme. So when I went to search for "Trek" all I got was these games which was not what I was looking for.

Trek 2.8 is real-time and not really Star Trek.

I believe Trek was only released for MS-DOS. It certainly was not on the TI99 4/A, I had one of those computers too.
