Remember how Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson promised full transparency in spending the $700 billion bailout money? And remember how bailout opponents predicted that the failure to mandate such transparency would allow all sorts of Halliburton-style shenanigans? From the looks of the first private contracts issued by the Treasury Department, it looks like the bailout opponents were correct.

As flagged by BailoutSleuth.com, Paulson is blacking out the sections of government contracts that spell out how much private firms will be paid for their services in administering taxpayer money. Here's a page from the compensation part of a contract with Bank of New York, which has been hired to do some of the bookkeeping (because, of course, the Bush administration is happy to privatize that function):

And here's a page from the compensation part of a Treasury contract with law firm Simpson Thatcher Bartlett - a firm being hired to provide "legal advice" to the government:

Think these are doctored images? Check them out yourself on Treasury's website - the first contract is here (blacked out section on page 25 of the PDF) and the second contract is here (blacked out section on page 5 of the PDF).
Transparency my ass. I think the way we are spending the money is the KEY thing people want to know. This is just a slap in the face to everyone all around. IMO the fact they are blacking out and hiding the figures goes to show they know they are trying to pull some BS.

You may be mad at the lack of transparency, but how will you feel when you find out how much the contracts are for? :) When people were saying the government would get money back some day from this 'investment', they forgot about the boondoggle that is administration costs. These contracts are probably in the mid to high 7 figure range, at the least.

I'd rather know that 699.99 billion went to admin costs and bonuses, and .01 went to the actual bailout plan than allow it to be spun however the administration sees fit.

I would rather see regulations that prevent bankers from betting your money and mine in what amounts to a unregulated horse track. But that will not happen either. That giant sucking sound you hear is the collapse of the American economy.

Yes. Trading was suspended this morning when the market opened in FREEFALL. :(

Bloody hell....

EDIT: That was a false report about trading having been suspended. But, the market is WAAY down. -441 at the moment.

I could name a few who didn't care to see it. Idiots.

LMAO. In fairness to LK, he's probably too close to the forest.

The bailout was a monumental blunder as I've been saying for a month.

Yeah, that's it...I can't see how the economy is being destroyed for not only the guilty, but also the innocent...

Spare me the bullshit.

As far as contracts, who cares? The compensation will be pittance to the ability to wind this down in an orderly fashion.

What amuses me is how many idiots would rather see chaos than order. It's indicative of their own ability to rationalize life and come to good decisions.
