Treasure hunt kids book

I was listening to KFI yesterday morning and they had on the author of a new kid's book. The catch is that the book has clues to "tokens" hidden around the US that can be redeemed for jeweled encrusted "creatures" that are in the book. Some of them are worth big $$.

The author used to have a software company and sold it and now is doing this with all his free time (and $$). Neat idea.

Join America's greatest treasure hunt ever.

The "treasure" is 12 magnificent one-of-a kind jewels, with a combined value of over $1 million. These 12 jewels are similar to the 12 crystallized Forest Creatures featured in the fairy tale A Treasure's Trove , by Michael Stadther. The story is about twelve forest creatures whose mates disappear after being crystallized by a dark dust that falls every evening.

To find one of these fabulous jewels, decipher the clues in A Treasure's Trove and go to an exact location to find a gold token. The gold token will give you the information you need to get your jewel. Twelve gold tokens, each one redeemable for one of the 12 jewels, are hidden in 12 separate locations across the continental USA. The tokens are located so that at least one is within a days's drive of anyone in the continental USA.

The tokens are not hidden on private property, or in dangerous places, but in places accessible to everyone. The tokens are not buried. Nothing has to be moved or lifted to find them.

This is not game of chance, nor a lottery, nor a sweepstakes. All you need is skill, imagination, and determination. It's the adventure of a lifetime!

sure... and the next thing you know, you're dodging flying arrows, getting chased by a giant bolder, and a companion who wont throw you a whip until you toss him the token.

wonder if the sales will make up for the value of the jewels?

29.95 + 9.95 shipping and handling

he said he's donated a bunch to public libraries, but you're right, he could actually come out ahead. The artwork is supposed to be pretty good (Bill Handel the radio guy was impressed).

this is similar to geocaching, just with more valuable prizes

i read an article abou geocaching, seemed like a neat idea granted people leave behind prizes.

As long as there aren't any snakes. I hate snakes.

This is a very cool idea, and yes it reminds be of Willy Wonka. Have to look up geocaching...

There was a cheesy PC game, kinda like Myst, but with a similar premise, "you could win $1mil dollars!". But one of the catches was that some of the questions were free-form essay questions, based on the game. Does anyone remember that? Probably released around 92 or so.

Actually, there was a gimmicky NES game too, with a similar sort of prize thing. At a certain date they were going to reveal the password to allow access to the last level on TV, and the first person to finish it, or the person with the highest score, or something like that, would win the RL grand-prize.

Atari tried that too, with their SwordQuest series for the 2600, but the final game was never released, and I suspect most of the prizes were never actually created/awarded either.
