I have to buy exercise equipment, choices are:

1. A Treadmill
2. Bike
3. Recumbent Bike

Any input, which brand(s) to purchase, and where would
be gratefully appreciated!

I'd get a treadmill...research shows that they are most often used. This months Consumer Reports has several reviews on them.

I find with exercise bikes the seats suck. I'd rather use my own bike with one of those dynos you attach to the rear wheel.

Hey if you say your name fast enough, it sounds like mine. :)

If you can handle impact exercise (some people have joints that can't handle it), then get a decent treadmill. If you can't a bike still isn't all that great, but it's better than nothing.

I'd suggest a quality ellipse machine if you can afford it.

You get the cardiovascular workout of running with the small amount of impact of the bike.

By posting 5 or more days a week, 9 or more hours a day, for the last two years.

I've been walking up and down 8 flights of stairs 5 times in the afternoon at work. Cheaper than buying equipment (not that I'm cheap or anything).

As a cyclist for 10 years, all I can say is that riding the indoor bike for an hour is just torture compared to a real bike. It's awfully hard to stick with an indoor program as the monotony makes minutes feel like hours. If you live somewhere conducive to riding a bike without getting killed, it's the way to go. Especially a mountain bike; riding offroad is so much fun, you forget you're getting a good workout in.

Agreed! One can't replace the outdoor experience with an indoor bike.

However, just need something for the winter months. I looked at Elliptical Trainer,
just too many choices, may need to try something in a store first.

freebsddude, first and foremost, what is the MAX you would be willing to spend on the piece of equipment.

Quality elliptical trainers don't come cheap.

Winter months call for your regular bike hooked up to a stationary trainer unit. The best of both worlds. You have a regular bike for nice weather and the trainer for the crappy days.

I was thinking something around $500, maybe a little more, but is price
basically what determines the quality/usability of these things ?
I guess you get what you pay for!!!!!!!!!!

Now is a good time to look at bikes and get a good deal. Any of last year's bike that are sitting around your local dealer should be "bargainable" as they will want to move them out to make space for next year's stuff. $500 is a good figure for a perfectly good bike (that you could actually take off road if you're looking at mountain bikes).

WOW! That is a lot of posts. It will take me decades to get anywhere close to what you have now.

Well went around looking today. Leaning towards a recumbent bike,
which brand(s) do you suggest ? Elliptical machine is too hard on
my knee for now, need to condition them on a bike first!!
