Treadmill - How to clean, fix... belt slipping

My parents recently got a treadmill from a neighbor who never used it. They gave the treadmill to me (because I need it :D). It's a DP Roadmaster 9020WM (can't really find anything about it on Google, probably a cheap Wal-Mart treadmill)

Anyway, when walking or running on it, the belt slips. Like you step on it and the belt stops moving, but the motor is still going. It only happens occasionally, but really ruins the functionality of the machine.

Can this be fixed? How? I'm going to go open it up and clean it tonight, but if anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears!

Thanks

Not to be an ass... but if you step on it and the belt stops moving are you sure you aren't over the weight limit? My bro in law had this problem since he's a body builder.

I think it only stops when running (coming down with a lot of force).

I'm about 195, so I don't think that would be over the limit, but I don't have a manual, so I don't know. Actually, it did the same thing with my Dad, who weights about 155.

Doubt you're over the limit then unless it's real crappy. ;)
They're usually in the 250-300lb range.
