Will I be able to cross the border into the US from Canada with an expired passport? I have a birth certificate as extra ID, and I know I've crossed the border many times with just my driver's license (which I lost a little while ago, =\ ) and birth certificate, but if I show them my expired passport will I have problems?

Also, after I cross into the US I will be flying to another US city. Will the expired passport cause any problems there?

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

UPDATE: Made it into the US fine with the expired passport (crossed the border by car), and picking up my boarding pass and clearing security was no problem either. I guess expired passports don't make a difference. I'll update again when (if?) I get back into Canada.

UPDATE #2: Made it back into Canada fine. A couple of times they asked me at the airport if I knew my passport was expired, I said yes, and they let me through. Crossed the border via car again and had no issues.

Crossing over might not be a problem but getting back in might be...they were pretty strict about having a current passport when i came back from canada not too long ago (this was at the airport - at borders i have no clue). Person wih me had an expired passport and they ended up taking her to the 'special room' for further questioning and a stern warning to get it renewed

AFAIK, it is required to have a passport to cross the border with the new regulations that were put in place.

If you were able to get into the U.S. somehow, I don't think having an expired passport would be a problem for getting on a place since you aren't crossing borders anymore.

Not a 100% sure about any of this though.

we don't enforce illegal immigration in the US , you can come on down with no documentation at all. and you can get a job and stay for the rest of your life

and get free health care, just like canada while us citizens have to pay for it

* Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

It isn't clear in your OP. Are you crossing into the US via AIR? If so you will need a current passport. Customs is one thing you don't want to screw with. Make sure everything is current or they will make your life a living hell. If it was me I wouldn't chance it.
