My g/f is going to Ireland for 2 weeks in january, And we're trying to figure what is the best way for her to be able to call back home and stay in touch.

I'm not sure if her cell phone will work over there (Verizon) and if it does, i'm sure it will cost $$$. Can you get a prepaid cell with an overseas carrier? What about international calling cards...

never done this before so any suggestions are appreciated.

thanks

too bad she has verizon. i'll be overseas next month as well and all i have to do is buy a prepaid sim, pop it into my gsm phone, and i can make and take calls from anywhere in the world.

the other option would be for you to buy a phone card and call her, or vice versa. prepaid cell hm...see if she can borrow a world gsm phone from a friend and go with the prepaid sim. or search google for mobile service companies in ireland.

interesting -- i'll look into that. Of course, it als depends on what hotel she stays at and what accomodations they have

After she arrives, she can e-mail her hotel phone number and room number to you. Of course you'll need to pre-arrange times when you call her. But this would be the cheapest method calling from USA to UK.

This is a great post since my GF goes to London in a couple of weeks. What kind of service is this? I checked out the site for a sec, do you call from your computer?

i'm hoping she'll be able to get internet access over there-- but i dont think she'll know until she gets there. She should though.

I think i'm going to investigate this GSM thing more though -- where do you get prepaid sim cards? Her parents have gsm phones, she might be able to talk them in to lending her one.

Nope it's a phone card.

You sign up for an account which is free.
Purchase a virtual calling card starting at $10, etc.
You can call domestic or international long distance immediately.
Once your minutes are gone you can recharge online using the same PIN.
