Traveling with smartphone

Simple question - I'm traveling out of the country to Costa Rica and I'd like to bring my smartphone with me (original Droid/Verizon).

I'm not too concerned with using it as a phone, more so for the camera/notes/etc - mostly all non-data services.

What I don't want to deal with are the crazy roaming charges and whatnot. I know I can put it in "airplane mode" to disable all transmissions, but it also disables WiFi, which I'd like to keep available.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Basically I want to turn my phone into an iPod touch equivalent during my travels. Thanks.

You try flipping the wifi on after you initialize airplane mode?

It's always the most obvious answers...

This works. Maybe this was added with an Android update or maybe I'm used to the iPhone (pretty sure this doesn't work there), but simply enabling airplane mode and then enabling Wi-Fi works.

Thanks.

Given how crappy the Droid 1's camera was, you might want to invest in a simple point and shoot camera. I'm just saying. 😛
