Traveling to Winston-Salem, NC

Senior member
My company is going to put me up in an apartment in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for an unspecified amount of time (could be 2 weeks, could be 3 months). Right now I work out of the Mid West but one of our VP's would like me to work with our user's in the South East for awhile. I'm single, 22, and will be driving so that I can take my mountain bike and rock climbing gear.

Does anyone know the area who could give me advice as to how to spend my time? I'd like to get outdoors as much as possible, maybe drive to the ocean on the weekends and am looking for specifics if possible.

Anyone know of any good nearby rock climbing places? Thanks in advance!

Might as well take a bike ride through Old Salem just to see it. But I don't know that area of NC well enough to give you any rock climbing ideas....

2 immediate things that come to mind:

1. Go to Krispie Creme - The one there is where it all started (Store #1 if you will)
2. Go to a concert at Ziggy's

My GF went to Wake Forest there. I'll ask her what else there is to do there. I'll report back later tonight.

I juts moved to Raleigh NC from Wilmington NC. I don;t know the area well enough here or in W-S to say anything good so can't help there.
But I am wanting to take up rock climbing, even bought some gear, so if you find any good spots tell me as I would like to give it a go.

Wow, it must be boring as sh!t if the number 1 fun thing to do is go to a donut shop.

I live in High Point and work in downtown Winston.

Go to pilot mountain, about 30 minutes north on Hwy 52. It's a neat mountain in the middle of flat land.
Like an above poster said, you should visit Old Salem.
My friends and I hang out at a bar called The Fox and the Hound in the Thruway shopping center on Stratford Road

Winston-Salem isn't exactly known for it's exciting 20-something activites. Not exciting, but a great place to live and raise a family.

That's not the most exciting thing to do.

Ziggy's is one of the best small clubs in the country though.

I agree. The ocean is still about 4-5 hours away. It is the wrong season to see the mountains. That being said they should not be that busy. There is plenty of old timy country stuff up in the mountains if that rocks your boat. Pilot Mountain and Old Salem have already been mentioned. Krispy Kreme and RJ Reynolds are headquartered there, might want to do a tour. Mt Airy is nearby, town that the Andy Griffith show was based off from.

When I lived nearby I did all my clubbing in Greensboro which was a cleaner city and had more fun clubs rather than strip clubs, which seem to be on every other block in WS.

Go to Asheville, I think it's only an hour or two drive and alot of hiking/rafting to do, also Cherokee has a casino.

You forgot to say go to krispie creme when the "hot donuts" sign is on. A fresh KK donut is one of the best things that can happend to a man. 🙂

and yes go to Ziggy's!

Let me add my 2 cents and say, "welcome to the armpit of North Carolina."

Charlotte has a nice lake not too far away. There is a public camping area ("something-falls" letme ask those who've been there) that allows hiking and mountain bike riding close to W-S.

Ziggy's - the place to find good music.

The Winston Salem Warthogs is a minor league baseball team there.

Wake Forest is pretty lame in terms of social crowd and pretty girls. Even UNCG (Greensboro) has better looking girls.

But you'll be on I-77 that'll take you to Charlotte or into VA. Also, Atlanta is like 4.5 hours away if you feel like a roadtrip. I-40 and 4.5 hours will take you to Willmington, NC and the beaches there.

And once again, welcome to Boredomville, population - you.

BDawg has it right.

one of my old college friends who is still in the area and working for Wake, sent me this link.
Someone he works with created it.

Who have you seen at Ziggy's?

I saw Vertical Horizon, Letters to Cleo, and George Clinton. There were a lot of shows that I didn't go to, but I heard were great.
