From what I've gathered, South Africa has both differently shaped prongs & runs on 220V, so I need both an adapter & a converter....is this correct? I've never been out of the US long enough to need any devices that plug into a wall outlet so I don't know about this stuff. Thanks for your input.

You can get a kit at many supermarkets that has the converter and a set of adaptors. Note that you don't need the converter for your computer, just the adaptor to whatever socket they use.

Not bringing my computer as I'll basically be out in the middle of nowhere (paleoanthropological excavations)... I assume I should buy a fairly high quality converter else risk damage to my devices?

remote part of SA has plenty lightning. On the Karoo (the highveld and lowveld) the static is everywhere. You can shock someone 1cm away.

You know about the crime right?

Many cell phones and other electric devices have a power supply that accepts 110-230 V (and both 50 and 60 Hz AC) nowadays, so I'd check the devices you plan to carry with you on your travel. The converter might be unnecessary and you'd just need an adapter.
