Traveling to Jamaica

Question for anyone who has any information or experience traveling there..

I'm going to Jamaica in a few months. I've never left the states before, so I have no U.S. Passport. And I'm not big on traveling, so this trip will probably never happen again soon. 😉 I've read the Jamaican Board of Tourism website and it says that you can enter with a valid US state issued ID and a certified birth certificate or a passport. It also states that people have fewer problems when they bring a passport. My question is, for anyone who has been there, should I go ahead and get a passport, even though I have no intention of traveling international beyond this time or just use my ID and birth certificate?

Any advice appreciated.

Edit: Topic Summary

Passports last 10 years, it's a good investment, get the passport. If you don't rush it's only $80 if I remember right.

Why spend $80 on something you might not ever use? 😛

passport.

although not required - read the state department's recommendations on travel in jamaca.

A passport just makes life so much easier. Every citizen should own one, especially if you leave the country.

"ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizens traveling as tourists may enter Jamaica with a U.S. passport or a certified U.S. birth certificate and current, government issued photo identification. Persons traveling with U.S. passports tend to encounter fewer difficulties upon departure than those who choose to use other documents. Visitors must have a return ticket and be able to show sufficient funds for their visit. U.S. citizens traveling to Jamaica for work or extended stays are required to have a current U.S. passport and visa issued by the Jamaican Embassy or a Jamaican Consulate. Travelers must pay a departure tax when leaving the country.

For further information, travelers may contact the Embassy of Jamaica at 1520 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20036, telephone (202) 452-0660; the Jamaican Consulate in Miami or New York; honorary consuls in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Seattle or Los Angeles; or via the Internet at http://www.congenjamaica-ny.org.

-edit- damn, too slow.

Get a passport.

It makes many aspects of your life easier.

Getting a driver's license
Opening a bank account
completing HR paperwork at a new job
Travelling on a whim

I just went there a few weeks ago and only needed a BC and a DL. It was actually easier to get into the US than it was to go to Jamaica. I heard that passports will be required pretty soon (though I don't remember where I heard this... possibly from an unreliable source).
