Traveling to Canada Question

Ausm

Lifer
I go fishing in Canada every year and as long as I had a valid drivers license that was enough to prove my U.S. citizenship. Someone told me due to the recent homeland security laws that I now need a passport to cross the border into Canada? Is there any truth to this?

TIA,

Ausm

don't need a passport yet, just a d/l and birth certificate... only sometimes will border patrol ask to see the birth certificate.
edit to say that in a few years you will need a passport. last i read, you will need it by 12/31/07

edit 2:
The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. In order to facilitate the implementation of this requirement, the Administration is proposing to complete it in phases following a proposed timeline, which will be published in the Federal Register in the near future.

Thx for the Info everyone. I am glad I don't need a Passport next Hey Lola can you give me the URL to the quote you gave me so I can e-mail that to all the people I go to Canada fishing with?

Oh that brings up another question? Will the Canadian authorities be on the same schedule as the U.S in regard to requiring passports?

TIA,

Ausm
