Traveling to Cairo w. a Female Friend

I'm travelling to Cairo with a female friend of mine. Egyptian law forbids non-married couples from sharing a room. Now, that's the law but I don't know if that is enforced in Western hotels. Also, do you think we would be able to pretend we're married even if we don't have the same last name? (I mean plenty of married people today don't have the same last name.)

Thanks

If anyone asks, you are on your honeymoon and she hasn't gotten her new drivers license yet.

Its Egypt

They have no oil (barely).

They need tourism to survive. Their laws do not apply to you.

It's an Islamic country, so that means they'll stone the both of you to death, or cut off your hands, or something.

Would you bet your life and/or future on that?

yes I am positive theri laws do not apply to Westerners.

Islamic law is for Muslims. Westerners are usually not Muslims therefore their legal system is not applied to them.

FTW! Better food there too.

You can always take a Mediterranean cuise and get the best of multiple worlds.

Personally I wouldn't risk anything in that region of the world currently. Some guy you've never known could see you going into the same room and sell you out for a few $ Corruption + Middle East + Tourist = Terrorist Hostage

Maybe I'm overrreacting/paranoid, but I'm not going to any country who's government and citizens could put me in prison on a whim.

You have nothing to worry about, it's the woman that gets stoned to death.

Found on the web from a local expert:

The answer is no. There is a law that bans couples to stay together without marriage documentation. Due to the understanding of the different culture in the west, this law is applied only with Arabs (Muslims or not). If your girl looks like a foreigner and can act like one and you reserve the room using your name and your passport, you will get away with it, but if they at the hotel reception discover she is Egyptian, they will not allow you to stay.

Also, I checked with hotels and there is no such law for tourists. Only Egyptians.

Somebody should get their reality check...their dark age laws apply to all, and are the most harsh to anybody who is not muslim.

EDIT: a good example here

I know what I am talking about.

dark age laws? What dark age laws does Egypt have that the U.S doesn't have?

Maybe you should look into some bogus laws the U.S has.

Doesn't mean they are enforced.

Claiming you're just recently married would work, methinks.

Then, tell me why you don't ever read anyone in the US being prosecuted for some old law from 1780 or something, but justa couple of days ago, two gay boys were whipped to death in Iran?

I have posted proof from a local expert that tourists are NOT required to show marriage documentation when checking into hotels in Egypt. That law applies to Egyptians only.

You can also CALL some hotel chains yourself and ask them.

Quite simply, you're wrong. He can stay in a hotel room with his girlfriend.

Gay people have been beaten or killed in this country by people, too? I highly doubt any Egyptians would do something like that to an American anyway, as it would kill their tourist industry.

And I just realized you said in Iran... we aren't talking about Iran.
