I travled out of town for an interview a few weeks ago. They sent me a traveler's cheque for my stipend. I've never used a traveler's cheque before. Can I spend this at any store?

most places, but you may have to wait for a confused store clerk to figure out how to use it.

Just go cash it at a bank and save yourself the troubhle

I do all my banking remotely in another town. I'd have to mail it in, which is why I would prefer to just use it locally.

Actually my expenses were slightly more than the stipend because American Airlines charges $15 for you to check a bag. :|

I would not assume you will be able to use it in a store. Travelers checks are so uncommon these days I don't think most clerks will have ever seen one before. If you try it, hope you get lucky. And bring photo ID just in case.

Most restaurants and hotels accept travelers checks without problem.

PSA, many foreign drawn travelers checks are printed on better paper than U.S. bank notes.
