Travel to the Bahamas - do you need a passport?

depends.
--from travelocity--

BEFORE YOU GO: Bahamas

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND CUSTOMS:
-Valid photo I.D. (driver's license is fine) AND a government-issued birth certificate (not hospital-issued) with a raised seal, OR a valid Passport.
-Non-US citizens, please contact the nearest consulate or embassy of the country to which you are traveling to determine your entry/visa requirements.
-Upon arrival in The Bahamas, you'll be given an Immigration Card to complete and sign. The Bahamian customs official will stamp the card and return it to you. Be sure to keep the card in a safe place, because you'll need to turn it in upon departure from The Bahamas.

(i'm gonna hijack this for awhile...if you dont mind).

Last time I went to the Bahamas you didn't need one, just a D/L was okay.

i went this year. yes you need one if you are a non-citizen (permanent resident). If you are a citizen, doesnt hurt to have one. they might have tightened up security post 911. it is a different country after all

The problem is proving that you are a US Citizen.

D/L went by the way in the mid 90s.

What about Hawaii or Puerto Rico?

Hawaii is a US state (last time I checked 😛), no travel restrictions if coming from within the US.
Puerto Rico is a US territory - same applies.
