OK, so I know that various companies likely have different policies regarding this, but it isn't something I want to ask HR at this point, so I'm curious which situation makes more sense.

I live ~10 min. away from my office. I have a meeting I need to attend tmw. afternoon in Manhattan, about an hour's commute away. I can do one of two things - work for 1.5 hours at the main office, then during company time, travel to my meeting, or, work in a satellite office of ours in Manhattan, for which I'd only need maybe 20 min. of travel time to get to the meeting.

Now, my question is - if I were to go the Manhattan office, which is further away from my home, am I likely expected to leave earlier to get there for 9 AM (my work starting time), or could I leave my house when I normally do (about 8:50 when going to my normal office) then get to the Manhattan office probably by 10:00?

It depends.

I can tell you that most companys would love to have the person who is willig to do a bit more than the guy who is concerned about "fairness"

Are you salaried or hourly?

Is there someone else at your office who also needs to attend the meeting that you could ask?

I'm salaried, and the only IT person in the company, hence why I am curious about fairness, as opposed to just job security.

Tough one. I would say it you did travel to the satelite office to start your day, then you should be there by 9:00am. Also if you have work to do in the main office, and work to do in the satelite office, then you should go to the main office first since there is no benefit to the company which office is serviced first, but you gain benefit since you have to travel to the other office during off peak hours.

If you are going to spend the whole day in the Manhattan office, then you should be there at 9.

I see nothing wrong with going to the main office at your normal time, then traveling to the meeting and back to the main office.
