So I'm flying to South Africa in about a month, and I'm looking for things to keep myself and my 2 year old occupied.

I need recommendations on a portable DVD player that will make a 19 hour flight without an outlet. I'm pretty sure it's a pipe dream, but I'm open to any suggestion that will make Dora the Explorer viewable on the trip.

Are there any portables out there that run on plain batteries? Can I rig up a charger that takes 24 9-volts in parallel, and pack 400 of them?

I'm open to (almost) anything!

Everyone travelling near me thanks you!

That would be a bad idea. Do a search for dry battery and TSA

I'd expect (hope) that both you and the 2 year-old will be able to sleep for part (most?) of the 19 hour trip. Have you considered a handheld video player like and iPod or one of the other MP3 players that now has video?

I'm not sure that the battery lasts much longer on them than on a portable DVD, but I'm guessing that the smaller screen might help you win on power consumption... or at least the smaller batteries will keep you from carrying as much.

Good luck with that!
