Trashed hard drive partitions

A friend of mine at school has a Dell laptop, and she asked me to have a look at it. It wouldn't boot into Windows XP, so I booted Pen Drive Linux from my USB drive and then fired up gparted.

It turns out that her Windows partition was somehow resized to around 2gb, and then there was a massive 108gb empty void on the drive.

Are there viruses that can cause this? Do any of you have any idea of what is going on here? Can her data be recovered?

Thanks. :)

Her partition table might just be messed up. How many partitions are you really seeing? I believe Dells have 2 partitions. One for recovery and the other for the OS.

Only 1 partition exists, and it's about 3gb in size and appears to have an XP install on it. The rest of the 110gb drive is showing as free space.

How can I fix the partition table?
